COLUMBIA, Ky. - The Campbellsville University men's volleyball team couldn't have asked for a better start to their 2020 season after starting 4-0 with wins over the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Poll and with that start junior
Ramon Matos also earned the Mid-South Conference Defender of the Week honor, MSC officials announced Monday.
Matos was a force on the front row for the Tigers finishing with 26 kills and more impressively 15 total blocks with two solo blocks and 13 block assists. His 26 kills finished the four-match stretch as the fourth-highest total on the CU team as his best performance of the week came in the season-opener against No. 2 Missouri Baptist.
In that match, Matos recorded a team-high tying 14 kills while assisting on eight of Campbellsville's 16 blocks as a team. He went on to score 12 kills and seven blocks for the week of the week in limited action against Culver-Stockton in CU's 3-0 sweep win but he added his two solo blocks in the Sunday match at Quincy University.
With this recognition, Matos becomes the first Tiger to earn a Mid-South Conference honor for the 2020 season and the second MSC Defender of the Week for CU since the conference started handing out weekly honors last season. A back row player,
Joudiel Poveymirow earned his lone Defender of the Week honor in 2019's last week of recognitions on Apr. 3 as Matos becomes the first front row Defender of the Week for Campbellsville.
Campbellsville men's volleyball will head back to Illinois this upcoming Friday and Saturday when they compete in the NCCAA Invitational hosted by Trinity Christian University in Palos Heights, Ill. where the Tigers will compete in four matches over the two-day span.
