Campbellsville University's
Corbin Harris is now a two-time winner of a Mid-South Conference Champions of Character award — this time for men's indoor track & field, conference officials announced. Harris also won the same award for men's cross country.
Champions of Character is a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) initiative that recognizes athletes who mirror the core values — integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.
Every nominee is required to supply a letter of recommendation from their coach and also a personal letter to the conference athletics directors, who form the voting committee.
"Corbin is a great individual and I have enjoyed coaching him thus far. Being a member of cross-country and track and field, I get the privilege of being around him all year round," said his coach,
Hilary Lakes. "His personality and his character being something special to the team.
"He works hard in track and field and has made improvements in his running achievements over the last couple of years. In addition to cross-country and track and field, Corbin also helps the Sports Information Office with game-day stats as well as being a part of SGA and FCA here on campus. Corbin is an outstanding student-athlete and always displays the NAIA Characteristics on a daily basis."
Harris said that for years, he had always understood and upheld the values of respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
"Throughout my life, I knew the significance of implementing the values of integrity, respect, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship," said Harris. "As I have gotten older, the importance of pursuing these qualities on a daily basis has grown tremendously. While I was young, my parents taught me these qualities. As I tried to uphold them to make them happy, I never knew how important they were."
This past summer, Harris worked at a summer camp known as Camp Loucon. Throughout the summer, he spent time ministering to kids the Word of God and used his relationship with Christ to serve and love the children who came to the camp. One way he was able to do this was by being named to the leader of the cross-country portion and by starting his own track portion where he was able to run with the children and teach them how different aspects of the sport.
With the cross country sections, he spent time with the kids stretching, running, swimming, doing stride outs, and we even hosting a race at the end of the week.
"I tried not to only focus on the physical aspects of the sport, but the mental aspects as well," continued Harris. "I tried to show the campers how to be good sports when racing and the importance of positive and uplifting encouragement towards both your teammates, and the people you are competing against. "
In the future, Harris plans on dealing with athletes on a daily basis as a sports agent. He believes that through his platform as a sports agent, he will be able to show the athletes he is representing that what they do is more than just a game.
