INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The Campbellsville University wrestling team returned to action the weekend, after a two week christmas break. This weekends action served as a warmp up and helped determine the CU line up for the upcoming National Duels.
The Midwest Classic wrestling tournament wrapped up with Adams State taking the team title with 142 team points and 133-pounder Shane Perkey of the University of Indianapolis taking Michael O. Horton Most Outstanding Wrestler honors. 141-pounder, Kevin McElhaney of Gannon won the most falls award.
For Campbellsville, Senior Kyle Norred and Freshman George Sheppard both managed to place in tough brackets. Kyle finished in 8th place at 141. After a first round bye and a second round tech fall over Pablo Ramos from Missouri Baptist, Kyle advanced to the quarter finals and lost a 6-1 decision to # 2 seed and eventual champion Matt Erwin of Indianapolis. In the consolation bracket, Kyle defeated Brandon Bradley of UNC-Pembroke and then lost a 3-2 decision to the # 1 seeded Tony Washington of Newberry. At 157 George Sheppard continued his outstanding freshman year with a nice showing. George finished in 5th place in a very tough bracket and placed ahead of 2x NCAA Champion Antonio Guerra of Findlay and # 3 ranked NCAA wrestler Mike Horton of Indianapolis.
The Tigers enter this weekends National Duels as the # 6 seed. The team travels to Waterloo, Iowa this Thursday and will compete at the two day event. The brackets have been released and Campbellsville will see Montana State University-Northern in the first round. If the Tigers are able to get past MSU-Northern in the first round, they will see the winner of # 3 seeded Great Falls Montana and University of Cumberlands, Kentucky match. The Tigers hope to improve on the 7th place National Duels finish from a year ago.
Scouting MSU-Northern: The Northern Lights from Montana feature National Runner up Corey Borges at 125. Corey Borges defeated James Hicks of Campbellsville in Overtime at last years National Tournament. They are also strong at 141, 149 and feature another National Runner up at 197 in Brian Frichtman. Glen Jackson has a 10-2 decision over Frichtman at the 2006 National Tournament.
