The CU Tiger wrestling team had a strong showing at the King Colleg Open on Sunday at Viking Hall in Bristol, Tennessee. A total of ten Tigers placed in their respective weight class, with five taking first place and 9 placing in the top 3. Teams in attendance were Gardner Webb, VMI, University of the Cumberlands, King College, Spartanburg Methodist College, Cumberland University, Carson-Newman College and others.
Freshman Johnny Papesh (Aurora, Ohio) won the gold at 125 pounds with a very solid effort all day long. Strong in all three positions, Papesh looked impressive in his freshman tournament debut.
Another freshman, Tom Pretty (Cincinatti, Ohio) also claimed his first college tournament title. Tommy, another well rounded wrestler, also performed well in all three positions and cruised to the championship with a 2nd period fall in his finals match.
The third Tiger to win gold was sophomore George Sheppard (Newport News, VA.) at 157 pounds. Wrestling un-attached, George cruised to thetournament finals and claimed a 5-3 victory in the finals.
Junior Bryan Wells (Tallwood, VA) was the fourth Campbellsville wrestler to win the tournament with his showing at 165 pounds. Seeing his first action of the year, Wells had a close semi final win over Sherman White of Carson Newman, but really wrestled well and dominated his Finals opponent.
Senior Glen Jackson was the fifth Campbellsville wrestler to win the tournament on Sunday. Glen looked impressive on the day and scored a solid decision over Ronnie Ellsworth of VMI in the finals.
Redshirt freshman Ruben Perez (Tampa, FL) finished third at 149 pounds with a record of 6-1 on the day. J
unior James Linker finished in 3rd place at 165 pounds after going 4-1 on the day. Redshirt Freshman Phillip Oudhuis fought through his bracket to claim another 3rd place finish for the Tigrers. Senior heavyweight Chad Brown went 3-1 in his bracket to finish 3rd. The other Tiger wrestler to place on the day was Sophomore Daniel Rucker who finished in 6th place at 125 pounds.

Campbellsville will return to the mat Nov. 13th when they host Cumberland University in Gosser Gym at 7:00 pm.
