Campbellsville used a 13-2 run in the second half to overcome an eleven point deficit and defeated Taylor University 66-64 tonight in the nightcap of the Lou Cunningham Classic at Campbellsville University.
Â
Taylor shot 65% in the first half and led by double digits after breaking a 3-3 tie at the start of the game before the Tigers closed the gap to six at halftime.
Â
The Tigers then used a 9-3 run to start the second half and tied the game at 41-41 with a
Zach Allender bucket with 14:31 to play in the game.  However, Taylor responded by outscoring the Tigers 19-9 over the next six minutes and built the lead to 58-47 with 8:04 remaining.
 Â
Â
"That was the turning point of the game," said CU coach Keith Adkins. "Down by 11 with eight minutes to play our guys finally turned it up a notch and did the extra things we needed to get the win. Give Taylor a lot of credit. They are well coached and are a very physical team that are not a lot unlike what we are going to see in the Mid-South Conference," said Adkins.
Â
Following a Campbellsville timeout, the Tigers responded by outscoring the Trojans 13-2 over the next two and a half minutes and tied the game at 60-60 when
Jordan Benock made two free throws with 4:32 to play.   The Trojans would take a 62-60 lead on two free throws by Alex Daniel with 4:14 to go, but Campbellsville would tie the game on a pair of Allender free throws with 4:01 to play.
Â
Taylor again had a chance to regain the lead at the free throw line with 3:35 to play, but Alex Daniel missed both shots. Both teams missed shots but when
Zach Allender rebounded a missed Taylor shot, the Tigers got the ball to
Shawn Savage who hit a three-pointer with 2:03 to play which gave Campbellsville its first lead at 65-62.  Daniel would make two free throws for Taylor two cut the lead to one and Benock hit one of two free throws give Campbellsville the 66-64 lead with 1:07 to play.
Â
Zach Allender then came up with a steal with :41 seconds to play and Savage missed a jumper with :12 to go. Taylor would get one last look as Alex Daniel's 15 footer to tie was blocked by
Jordan Benock. Benock would pull the ball out of the air with no time remaining and Campbellsville got the 66-64 win.
Â
Campbellsville won its second game in a row and is now 3-3.
Â
Zach Allender scored 22 points and is now tied for fifth all time on the CU scoring list. Â
