No. 1 Robert Morris may be 3-5, but they're still Robert Morris.
Campbellsville got a taste of that in the Mid-South Conference Challenge Friday night in Frankfort, Ky. where the Tigers lost to the Eagles 73-71.
"That is definitely misleading," said Campbellsville coach Keith Adkins. "They may not be No. 1 (waiting on some injuries to heal and other players to become eligible), but they're definitely a top-10 team."
Robert Morris, which lost five straight on the road early in the season, rallied from a 48-43 deficit in the second half. The loss ended quite a run for the Tigers who had beaten No. 11 Union and No. 17 Freed-Hardeman in the same week and were looking for some love in the NAIA rankings.
The Tigers (6-2) were led by 18 points and six rebounds from
Nestor Colmenares and
Joe Robinson's 17 points and 12 boards.
It was Robinson's layup with 27 seconds remaining that pulled CU to within 70-69 after trailing by four (68-64) just a minute earlier.
In the first half neither team led by more than five points.
"The difference in the game was that they were making plays and we weren't," said Adkins. "They got to the line eight more times than we did and that was huge."
In the second half, Robert Morris was 4 for 7 from 3-point range after only seven minutes gone. The Eagles ended hitting 9 for 19 from behind the arc and cashed in 80 percent of their free throws in the second half.
"We're just not making defensive stops when we need to and not grabbing rebounds off the defensive board."
Campbellsville was 8 for 22 from treyville, and hit 75 percent of its free throws, 6 for 6 after intermission.
Robert Morris beat Campbellsville 32-29Â on the boards, but could forced CU into only eight turnovers while playing a zone defense.
"They certainly played more zone than we expected them to play," said Adkins
Campbellsville plays Indiana University Northwest on Saturday at 9:15.
