Heavyweight
David Coffey made a strong entrance into the 2009-10 season collecting
four falls and leading Campbellsville University wrestling to its first
tournament win of the season Saturday at the Ohio Northern University
Tournament. Coffey collected the most falls of the tournament and finished
fourth in the tournament.
CU collected 118 points, followed by Limestone with 111 and host Ohio
Northern was third with 109.5 points.
Tommy Pretty was runner-up in the
133-pound division, losing only his second match of the season to Nick Wykoff
of West Liberty State in the final.
At weight 174, national qualifier
Bryan Wells finished third. However, CU
did not gain team points for the finish, as Wells was listed on Campbellsville's
second team.
Phillip Oudhuis was fifth in the weight class as a member of CU's
first team
Spencer Adams placed third at 184 pounds with 3-2 decision in the consolation
match .
Nick Waldrop reached the finals at 149 pounds to face Mitch Smith of West Liberty. Smith is ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division II. Waldrop wrestled well but dropped a 8-7 decision and suffered his first loss of the year at 149 pounds.
Pretty also wrestled a ranked NCAA II wrestler in the finals and also could not come away with the victory. He dropped a 5-4 decision in the finals.
In all, Campbellsville had 12 wrestlers place in the tournament and the team finished ahead of a number of ranked NCAA division II and III schools. MSC teams Cumberland and Lindsey Wilson also competed with Cumberland finishing 7th and Lindsey placing outside the top 10.
"I'm very happy for our team to win this tournament," said James. "This is a very strong finish to the first half of our season and sends us into the Christmas break in a positive way.
"We will now take some time off to focus on final exams this week and then get back to work over the break to prepare for the Midwest Classic and the National Duels in January."
