Jacob Murton posted a 4-0 record at the NWCA National Duals
Jan. 9-10 in Cedar Springs Iowa, as No. 11 Campbellsville University handled
some of the NAIA's best competition for a seventh-place finish.
Murton was the only Tiger wrestler to collect a pin during a 36-9 opening-round
loss to Missouri Valley.
Campbellsville bounced back from the loss to knock off No. 2 California
Baptist, 21-19, and No. 8 Oklahoma City, 36-9, in the next two rounds. The
Tigers fell to Lindewood, 27-15, in the fourth round, but finished strong with
a 25-12 win over Dana College in the seventh-place match.
Tommy Pretty (2-0), Matt David (1-0) and Allen Scruggs (1-0) joined Murton as
the other undefeated wrestlers at the duals. Diante Wright, Conor Yound and
Daphilo Success also wrestled well over the weekend and came up with big wins
for the Tigers. Wright had a pair of clutch pins against Cal Baptist and Dana,
while Young had wins over second-ranked Nick Turner of Oklahoma City, Cataline
of Cal Baptist and a big pin against Dana College. Matt David's win came
against nationally-ranked John Rojas of Cal Baptist.
Success lost his first match to seventh-ranked Chauncey Phillipps of Cal
Baptist, but then had wins over his opponents from Lindenwood and Dana on
Sunday. Scruggs made the most of his opportunity to wrestle at the duals with a
pin over Jake Mabry of Oklahoma City. Other CU wrestlers with wins over ranked
opponents this weekend were:
