Tigers go cold, Georgetown wins 64-51

Campbellsville assistant Bryan Milburn had an observation near the end the Tigers 63-57 win over Pikeville on Thursday: "If we hold our opponents in the 50s, we're going to be hard to beat," he told some guys within earshot on the bench.

Osborne was about to become a profit until Georgetown's Vincent Crutcher exerted himself in the last three minutes of the first half, giving the home-standing Tigers a 28-24 working margin. They went on to build on the lead to win 64-51.

"We're putting way to much pressure on our defense," said coach Keith Adkins. "What our offensive production is telling the team, 'we have to hold the opponent to 55 points or less or we're going to lose.'"

Campbellsville led 23-19 with four minutes to go in the half, but Georgetown scored of the last 11 points before intermission. CU took the lead at 35-34 and 37-36 after intermission, but that's when things started to unravel.

"For 32 minutes we carried out our game plan pretty good," said Adkins. "But then their pressure got to us and we turned it over or took a rushed shot. The good thing is you won't find very many teams that play defense like Georgetown."

Georgetown went on a 12-2 run that ended up being a 17-4 run before Campbellsville could find the rim. Campbellsville went eight minutes without a field goal during the stretch when the Tigers could muster only two free throws.

Georgetown, averaging 87 points per game, was held 23 below that, but that didn't keep the 14-3 (2-0 MSC) team from showing why it was picked to win the conference.

G-town's Vincent Crutcher led all scorers with 18 points, 12 in the second half. Three other Georgetown players reached double figures.

Campbellsville was led by Nestor Colmenares' 14 points and got support with a 10-point effort from  JaVaughn Espritt.

"We have got to find some offense outside of Nestor," said Adkins. "Right now everything goes through him and we have to find some touches and points from some other people."

The teams tied with 29 rebounds apiece, CU was forced in 18 turnovers after eight in the first half. The Tigers hit 38 percent of its field goals, 27 percent from three. The Tigers were 9 for 16 from the free throw line.

Campbellsville 13-5 (1-1 MSC) goes on the road Thursday to Lindsey Wilson.
