With three weeks to go before the Mid-South Conference Cross Country Meet, several Campbellsville runners ran their best times of the season at the Fast Cats Classic in Owensboro, Ky., hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan College.
"We went out and ran great," said CU XC mentor Hilary Cebulko.
The women finished third out of eight teams and the men, who were missing several runners because of an academic conference in Washington, D.C., had only four runners, one shy of enough for a team score.
Christian Black broke 29 minutes for the first time. The freshman from Radcliff, Ky. ran a 28:51.73 for a 48th place finish.
Qualaun Reed was Campbellsville's top male runner with a 28:34.62 (44th place) and
Andrew Simmons ran a 28:37.89 (46th). The only other male CU runner,
David McKellar, ran a 36:00.44, good for 70th place.
The women were again led by freshman
Maggie Mattingly who finished 14th overall in the time of 19:16.
But Cebulko said
Emily Wesley (36th) and
Lauren Little (39th) both had personal bests, with a 21:05.69 and 21:12.95, respectively.
Other runners for the women included:
Amy Etherington, 19:40.98, 21st;
Tawny Vilchis, 19:48.30, 24th;
Summer Rines, 20:38.40, 32nd; Daisey Perez, 22:00.60, 45th;
Erin Collins, 22:29.44, 51st;
Natasha Janes, 22:33.09, 52nd; and
Kasey Vitkus, 22:47.13, 55th.
Southern Indiana won the women's race with Belmont second. Campbellsville beat Austin Peay State University, St. Mary of the Woods College, Kentucky Wesleyan, McKendree University and Brescia University.
Southern Indiana and Belmont also finished one-two in the men's division.
Cross Country does not run again until Saturday, Nov. 6 when they run in the MSC meet in Portsmouth, Ohio.
