Box Score Campbellsville University dropped its first Mid-South Conference East Division game this season, 52-21, to Georgetown College in the Victory Sports Network NAIA Game of the Week on Thursday.
Â
Georgetown (3-2, 2-0 MSC East) jumped out to a 28-7 lead en route to taking over the driver's seat in the East with the win over 25th-ranked Campbellsville (4-3, 3-1 MSC East).
The road Tigers used a balanced offensive attack to eclipse Campbellsville in its "Black Out" game by posting 587 total yards of total offense (299 passing, 288 rushing).
"It's a matter of taking what they give you," Georgetown head coach Bill Cronin said in his Tiger Network postgame show. "Today, they mixed it up a little bit, and we mixed it up a little bit, it was good stuff."
Campbellsville, wearing new black uniforms for its second-ever night game at Finley Stadium, was held to 326 total yards and only 75 on the ground.
"We knew going into this ballgame we had to take that running game away from them. They were very dangerous on the edge and have some quick speed," Cronin said. "Our defensive coaches really did a great job forcing them to throw the ball. Any team that is forced to throw the ball makes it really difficult."
Both Tiger teams traded touchdowns early in the game with a 1-yard rushing score by Georgetown's Blake Naylor and a 5-yard pass from Robert Hill to Stan Warrenhuffman for Campbellsville. Georgetown ended up holding Campbellsville, which averages 36.5 points per game, to only one touchdown in each of the first three quarters. The orange and black seemed to have their way offensively in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered touchdowns following Warrenhuffman's catch, taking a 28-7 lead.
"They got us in a pickle where they were able to run the ball and then we couldn't get pressure on the quarterback. I thought our coverage was pretty sound, but we had to cover them six or seven seconds and that's too much time," said CU head coach and defensive coordinator Perry Thomas.
Nathan Cooper took over at QB for Campbellsville midway through the second quarter and led CU to a touchdown on a 42-yard pass to Harold Small. However, Georgetown answered with a 35-yard field goal by Alex Kreimer and then a minute later scored on a 13-yard pass from Kaelin Ammons to Blake Naylor for a 38-14 halftime advantage.
Thomas' defense opened the second half as strong as always, as it shut out its opponent's offense in the third quarter for the fourth time this year. Georgetown collected only 50 yards and no points in the first 15 minutes after halftime.
"We relaxed and thought this was easy, and then they went in and made a great adjustment and came out storming. It was tough for us to get our composure and our youth caught up with us," Cronin said.
The home Tigers forced Georgetown's first punt of the game on the opening drive of the second half. CU senior Calvin Bini took the punt 7 yards for his only return of the night and 52nd of his career - breaking the CU career record for most post returns. Previous record holder William Mulder was in attendance after being honored pregame for his role on the 2010 Spokane Shock team that won Arena Bowl XXXIII in August.
For Campbellsville's first drive of the half, Hill moved CU 66 yards down field to the Georgetown 21 before throwing an interception at the 8 yard line. The home team quickly took the ball back, as Trey Mayes recovered a fumble on the following play. Two plays later, Hill found Warrenhuffman in the end zone for Campbellsville's final score and Warrenhuffman's second two-touchdown game this season.
While the defensive surge fueled some Campbellsville comeback spirit, a fourth-and-goal stand at the 2 with 12 seconds to go in the quarter ripped it all away. Campbellsville moved the ball 77 yards on 13 plays on the final drive of the third quarter. A pass from Hill to Warrenhuffman nearly led to a record-breaking third receiving touchdown in a game, but the junior from Cincinnati was tackled at the 5, setting up first-and-goal. CU was unable to gain ground and took a loss on a fourth-and-2 quarterback draw, giving the ball back to Georgetown. Zach Goebel made the big play for the visitors.
"We felt that if we could get that touchdown, then that might open the door for us, and that might be the thing that really pushes us over the top. We took a chance, but in retrospect we probably should have kicked the three," Thomas said. "Obviously it didn't work, and obviously it gave them all of the momentum back."
Georgetown responded with a 97-yard drive capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Coty Minnis and added another score on its next drive. A 2-yard rush by Logan Osborne to break the 50-point mark against Campbellsville for the ninth time in 23 meetings.
Campbellsville had only two offensive series and 4 yards in the final 15 minutes, a one-play drive that ended in an interception by Georgetown's Jake Conner and a three-and-out with seven minutes left in the game.
Campbellsville travels to the University of the Cumberlands for a cross-divisional battle next Saturday, Oct. 16. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
