Box Score Campbellsville University hit five 3-pointers in the first three minutes to take an early 15-point lead and kick start the 2010-11 season with an 83-61 win over Southern University of New Orleans in the Georgetown College Andrew Elswick Memorial Tournament. CU worked the perimeter, collecting 13 3-pointers in the game with four each from Bowling Green, Ky., seniors Monie Hudson and Shawn Savage. Senior forward Brett Crittenden joined in the action with three 3's, including two of the first five for the Tigers.
"Coming back to our level, I think you'll see a big difference in our shooting," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "The past two (exhibition) games, we've been playing against big, athletic players and we haven't been able to play our game."
Before the game could tip, a technical foul was charged to SUNO for having a player in the wrong jersey number. Hudson missed the two technical free throws, but went on to lead CU 67 percent shooting from the floor (8-of-12) and 21 points in his NAIA debut. The main reason being that the point guard didn't play the point.
"Having never competed in this league before, we probably threw too much pressure on him at first. We moved him to the two and that allowed him to run around and make things happen," Adkins said. "I think he relaxed tonight and just about felt as comfortable as he has in a game."
Savage, who started at the point guard position, added 16 points. Crittenden appeared to be one of the most complete Tigers in the opener, moving back and forth from the wing to the block most of the night. He finished with 12 points, five assists and three steals.
Overall the starting five combined for 63 of the Tigers' points, as Jonas Bohm had nine in the post and JaVaughn Espritt was held to only five points in the season opener.
The closest Southern got to the Tigers was 12 points (46-34) early in the second half, but CU worked its lead up to its largest of the night (22) points with the final score after an Adrian Whelan 3-pointer in the final minute.
Campbellsville (1-0) will be on the road the first two weeks of the regular season before opening at home Nov. 26-27.
