Tigers' rally falls short in loss to Indiana Wesleyan

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University cut a 16-point game down to one in the final 10 minutes of the game, but was unable to overtake the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats in a 78-76 home opener loss in the 11th annual Lou Cunningham Classic.

Monie Hudson hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to slice the Cats' lead to a point, 77-76, but Derrick Troyer hit 1-of-2 free throws to keep the lead at a basket for the Tigers' final possession. Campbellsville had two chances late. Caleb Harris, who led the charge off the bench with 14 points, missed two free throws, but CU came up with the team rebound. However, IWU, ranked No. 24 in NAIA Division II, denied a second shot by the Tigers in the final seconds.

The Tigers cut the lead down many times along the way, pulling within two, 36-34 after six straight points by Harris with two minutes left in the first half. Indiana Wesleyan took a 41-36 lead into the break, despite Harris' 12 points off the bench and efforts to keep the Tigers in the game.

In the second half, Patrick Hopkins was unstoppable for the Wildcats. The post player scored 19 points in the second half to finish with a double-double 27 points and 12 rebounds. Will Hubrertz led the IWU charge in the first half with 11 points and finished with 14 along with Troyer.

Hudson led CU in the second half with 12 points to finish with 19 points in the game, while Brandon Williams had 11 in the second period to lead the Tigers with 19 points in the game. Shawn Savage had 12 for CU. Campbellsville's starting post players combined for only six points in the game, all coming from JaVaughn Espritt.

"This game was a complete disappointment. The bottom line is we didn't deserve to win this game. We had a chance late, but I think our guys got a false since of how things are with us winning the Trevecca and Cumberland games late. We did not show anything to hang our hat on to say we deserved to win tonight," CU head coach Keith Adkins Said. "Until the guards show they can stop the dribble and until the big guys can stop anybody in the post, we're going to struggle to win, like we did tonight."

Campbellsville (4-2) returns to action Saturday in the Lou Cunningham Classic to host Brescia University at 4 p.m. IWU (7-3) will meet University of the Cumberlands at 2 p.m. in the Classic.

The Tigers' game will be broadcast live in Central Kentucky on K-Country 105.7 FM and online at KCountry1057.com. Bryan Blair will call the action.
