Tigers beat Asbury, 81-67, in annual Warsaw game

Box Score WARSAW, Ky. -- Campbellsville University extended its home away from home win streak to seven games Monday, as the Tigers took down Asbury University, 81-67, in its annual game at Gallatin County High School.

The annual neutral site game, now in its eighth year, is organized by former Gallatin County Board of Education member and former CU Chairman of the Board, Dr. David Morris.

"Dave Morris has been very kind to us. It's something we look forward to every year, getting out of our own gym and playing a 'road game,'" CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "This is a nice facility. It's set up for a college game if you want to play one here, but at the same time its 10 feet short as a high school floor."

The shorter distance from hoop to hoop led to the Tigers' second 80-point game of the season. CU jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first five minutes with the help of eight points from senior point guard Shawn Savage. However, former Kentucky Wildcat walk-on Adam Delph heated up, single-handedly outscoring CU 11-1 over next three minutes to tie the game, 15-15.

Delph was nearly unstoppable for the Tiger defense, as he unloaded 25 points for his third straight 20-point game.

"Adam's a nice player. He comes from one of the best high school programs in the state (Pleasure Ridge Park High School) in Louisville," Adkins said. "He's got some talent and athleticism and has really good coaching."

Delph was alone though for the first half as Campbellsville scored eight unanswered points en route to a 39-28 halftime lead. CU shot 45.5 percent from the floor in the first half and held the Eagles to only 31 percent.

In the second half, Phillip Morrison followed Delph's lead and scored 14 points in the half. The duo combined for 43 of the Eagles' points with Morrison scoring 18 in the game. The additional scoring helped Asbury cut the lead down to seven early in the second half, but Campbellsville grew its lead to 20 on two separate occasions.

Campbellsville finished with four starters in double figures, led by JaVaughn Espritt and Caleb Harris' 16 points. Savage had only one point in the second half, finishing with 11 points, while Monie Hudson had 13 points.

Brandon Williams led the bench scoring with 11 points, while Jonas Bohm had six off the bench. Brett Crittenden scored the other eight for the Tigers. Espritt led the Tigers on the boards with 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Campbellsville (6-2) opens its Mid-South Conference season Thursday at home against Shawnee State University, a first-year MSC team. The Tigers won both meetings against SSU last season, including a 75-68 win at Gallatin County High School.

CU will also host MSC rival Georgetown College on Saturday at 4 p.m.

"In our conference, no body looks forward to any game. There's no easy one and you try to piece it together for the next one," Adkins said of the conference schedule. "The game Saturday means nothing right now. The only thing that means anything is Shawnee State on Thursday night. If we're not ready to play that one, then you'll see a replay of last Friday against Indiana Wesleyan."
