Lady Tigers roll 91-40 in season opener over Morris College

Women's basketball at Campbellsville University (1-0) took up where it left off 226 days ago, as the Lady Tigers took to the hardwood and defeated their season-opening opponent, Morris College, 91-40.

"It was time," said coach Ginger Colvin. "It's refreshing to play someone other than ourselves. The preseason has been long and our practices have been pretty physical. We are pleased to get this one under our belt."

Campbellsville scored the first 10 points of the game and led 24-5 with 13 minutes left in the first half when Alexia Williams deflected a pass and scored on a layup.

All-American Whitney Ballinger led CU at the break with 15 points and finished the game with 19. But nine of CU's players logged double-digit minutes in the game, seven with more than 18.

"We're a veteran team, but we've got some new pieces and we're trying to figure out which combinations work best and when," said Colvin.

But Colvin was most pleased with her team's defense. The Lady Tigers forced the Hornets into 38 turnovers while committing 19 themselves.

"We can score, no doubt about that," said Colvin, "But we think we're a lot better defensive team this year and I think we showed some of that."

Colvin said their No. 1 goal was to hold Morris under 50 points after giving up 87 to virtually the same team last season.

"Our second goal was taking care of the ball," admitted Colvin, "But I don't think we did a very good job of that.

Ballinger's 19 led all scorers, followed by 13 from Mackenzie Lee and 12 by Courtney Danis. Everyone but Katie Allen scored. The freshman from Fort Thomas, Ky. dished out an assist and collected a rebound in her five-plus minutes.

The Lady tigers hit 7 of 20 threes (35 percent), 36 of 74 from the field (48 percent) and 12 of 16 free throws (75 percent).

Morris was led by Clarissa Crump's eight points. The Lady Hornets fall to 0-2 on the season, having lost Friday night to Lindsey Wilson 99-67.
