MONTGOMERY, W.Va. - The No. 3 Lady Tigers fought off a lackadaisical
first half with an 11-0 run to start the second half and dispatched West
Virginia Tech, 81-60, Saturday afternoon.
It won't go down as one of the prettiest wins in Lady Tiger history. CU committed 27 turnovers and hit just 4 of 13 3s.
"It might go down in the record book as one of the two ugliest games we've ever played," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "A win is a win. I guess we'll just pack it up and go home."
CU ( 9-2, 4-0) trailed by as many as six in the first half and it took a 6-2 run at the end of the first half to manage of 33-29 edge at the break.
Whitney Ballinger, who led all scorers with 34 points, hit three buckets at the start of the second half and
Melly Heaton threw in one of her three 3s to push Campbellsville to a 44-29 lead.
The lead reached 18 at 51-36, but Tech (3-9, 0-3) would not go away. A bucket by Ashley Blaney with six minutes left in the game cut the margin to eight, 63-55. But CU outscored Tech 18-5 after that.
"We didn't take care of the ball today," said Colvin, "and when you do that it will make you look horrible.
"Thank goodness
Whitney Ballinger showed up today."
Ballinger finished with a double-double 34 and 11 rebounds.
Mackenzie Lee had a game-high eight assists. Joining Ballinger in double figures were Heaton, 14, and
Courtney Danis, 11.
"We need to find a way to get everyone else with the intensity of Corin (Dunn), Megan (Isaacs) and
Courtney Danis," said Colvin.
The Lady Tigers do not play again until they travel to Columbia, Mo. to play William Woods and Columbia colleges on consecutive nights, beginning New Year's Eve.
