Balanced Lady Tigers win MSC opener, 67-46

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Over their last four games Shawnee State has pretty much owned the Lady Tigers, winning three times. But Thursday night in the Powell Athletic Center, in the opening game of the Mid-South Conference for each school, Campbellsville found a way to turn the tide, 67-46.

CU (6-1) now leads the overall series 6-3, but had to call on a balanced effort to brush off the Lady Bears (5-3).

All eyes were on Whitney Ballinger during the pre-game warm ups, as she was recognized for becoming the new all-time blocked-shot leader for Campbellsville. Ballinger didn't let the fans down either, swatting away sevenm shots, to go with a nine-point, 10-rebound game.

The Lady Tigers used the hot hand of Melly Heaton to get even with, Shawnee as the Lady Bears took an early 6-0 lead, their largest of the night. Heaton stroked the first two baskets for the Lady Tigers firing up a pair of threes in the third minute of the game. Heaton stayed on fire well into the second half, going 4-7 from behind the arc, and finishing the game with 12 points.

Leading by nine at the break, the Lady Tigers came out with something to prove in the second half. A trio of Mackenzie Lee steals, and a pair of Ballinger blocks set the tone defensively. However, the offense didn't go unnoticed. A deep 3-point basket from Courtney Clifton boosted the intensity of the game and Courtney Danis' ability to get to the line on two straight possessions ultimately put it away giving Danis 15 points and Clifton 10.

Campbellsville had three players finish in double digits when the final buzzer sounded. But used a deep bench to seal the deal, as all players saw action.

"We take pride in our depth," said Lady Tiger head coach Ginger Colvin. "We have kids on our bench that could start for 100 percent of the teams in our conference. We have a great group of girls that play hard and know their roles but, most importantly, they just get after it."

Colvin hit the nail on the head with that one as Campbellsville outscored Shawnee State 16-5 off the bench.

Campbellsville returns to the hardwood on Saturday when Georgetown comes to town for a 2 o'clock tipoff.
