COLUMBIA, Mo. -Â Campbellsville wiped away the cobwebs from a two-week layoff and the Lady Tigers improved to 10-2 with a 67-59 win over William Woods College in the Columbia College Cougars vs. Cancer Classic.
The Lady Tigers trailed at the half 32-29 after being out-rebounded 29-17 in the first half. CU trailed 28-21 with five minutes to go in the initial 20 minutes, missed four straight free throws late and then used eight points by
Courtney Clifton down the stretch to close within 30-29 with a minute to play.
"I don't know what it was ... travel legs or whatever, but we were horrible the first 10 minutes," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "In the second half we played with more energy."
CU opened the second half on a 10-0 run fueled by a heavy dose of Lady Tiger teamwork. Five different players scored during the run and William Woods never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
"It was one of our better spurts of the year," said Colvin. "They were doubling Whitney (Ballinger) and she found two or three others for easy baskets. That made it tough on them defensively."
Woods ended up with a 45-37 edge on the boards.
Ballinger led three Lady Tigers in double figures with 18. She also had 11 rebounds.
Mackenzie Lee and
Courtney Clifton scored 11 and 17 points, respectively.
But Colvin was just has happy with the defensive effort of
Courtney Danis. Danis had eight points, but held William Woods' best player, Rachel Baker, to five points.
"I can't say enough about Courtney. She held their Division I transfer in check. I tell you, anybody 12-0 is pretty good."
The Lady Tigers play again tomorrow against host Columbia College at 7:00 EST in the Women's Basketball Classic.
