Extra time made Campbellsville University's first-ever regular season Mid-South Conference championship that much sweeter Thursday as the seventh-ranked Tigers held off No. 19 University of the Cumberlands, 83-80, in double overtime.
The win guarantees at least a share of the MSC crown and the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament, as the Tigers hold a one-game lead over Georgetown College with one game remaining.
Â
"It's heart, soul, guts, determination - all those words you can use to describe a good win or a great performance, throw them out there about this basketball team," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "I knew it wouldn't be easy, and I don't think we made it easy for ourselves. We made some mistakes, but dadgum that's a good basketball team … You can't tell me there's 20 better teams in the country than the University of the Cumberlands."
Â
Before the game, Adkins challenged his players to play every possession as if it were a championship game. His Tigers didn't let him down.
Â
Down seven, 54-47, with eight minutes left in regulation, Kansas native
Brett Crittenden hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 10-2 rally for CU.
T.J. Bishop capped the run with a hanging 3-point jumper from the top of the key to give Campbellsville its first lead, 57-56, in more than 10 minutes.
Cumberlands quickly regained the lead, but Bowling Green, Ky., native
Shawn Savage was there when the Tigers needed him, hitting a go-ahead 3-pointer, 62-60, with eight seconds left in regulation.
Â
"I've always expected and demanded a lot of Shawn," Adkins said. "I've wanted Shawn to be special, not just ordinary, and that was a special shot. He hadn't played great but he found a way to get a big one for us."
Â
Bishop picked up a foul on the other end that put Cumberlands' Nathaniel Mitchell at the line. He hit both to send the game into overtime.
Â
The home team came out blazing in the first extra period, as Bishop canned a 3-pointer, followed by a basket and two free throws by
Nestor Colmenares to reach 1,000 career points at CU. While Campbellsville jumped out to a 69-64 lead, Cumberlands worked it even, 69-69, with free throws from Mitchell and a 3-pointer by Chad Byron.
Â
Another 3-pointer from Byron gave Cumberlands a 72-70 lead with 1:36 left in the period, but Colmenares knocked down two free throws to force a second overtime.
Campbellsville struggled to shoot 52 percent from the free throw line in regulation, but pulled together for 78.6 percent shooting (11-of-14) from the charity stripe in the two overtimes. Colmenares' 5-of-6 shooting in the first overtime is a good example, as he was 1-of-8 in regulation.
Â
Both teams traded free throws for the first three minutes of the second overtime before Ja Vaughn Espritt pulled down a defensive board off a miss from Brandon Russ and turned it into two points for a 76-74 Tiger lead. The Patriots never pulled closer. Senior
Jordan Benock hit a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to put an exclamation mark on his Campbellsville home career, stretching the lead to five, 79-74.
Â
"I'm happy for every player and coach that had a part in this, but I'm so happy for seniors
Nestor Colmenares,
Jordan Benock and
T.J. Bishop to leave the Powell Athletic Center on this note. It's special," Adkins said.
Â
Savage and Chicago native
Caleb Harris hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win, as Harris hit his two freebies with 2.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give him 15 points for the game and CU a three-point lead, 83-80. Setting up on defense, he came up with a loose ball at the buzzer to seal the win.
Through the 50 minutes of play, nine players scored in double-figures, as Byron shot 3-of-4 from 3-point range and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 25 points. Travis Harvey had 14 for Cumberlands, while Mitchell and Russ each had 12.
Bishop and Colmenares each scored 14 for CU, while Crittenden and Benock each had 13.
Campbellsville (23-6, 11-2 MSC) looks to close out the regular season Saturday with sole possession of the Mid-South Conference championship as it travels to West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, W.Va., for a 4 p.m. game. Cumberlands (19-9, 8-5 MSC) travels to Pikeville on Saturday to battle for third-place in the Mid-South.
