Tigers take full control of MSC title, beat Tech, 76-55

Last year's 10-19 season was one Campbellsville University head coach Keith Adkins wanted to put behind him as fast as he could. Saturday's win buried it in the past, as the seventh-ranked Tigers downed West Virginia Tech, 76-55, and wrapped up sole possession of their first regular season Mid-South Conference men's basketball title.

"To get turned around that quickly is important for your program. A couple of bad seasons in a row can affect numerous things from recruiting, scheduling and eventually ratings," Adkins said. "It says a lot for the hard work these players have put in."

Campbellsville flipped its 2-10 Mid-South record on its head to finish 12-2 in conference action -- a Tiger record for Mid-South wins.

Adkins said he challenged his players earlier this year to take control and responsibility of the season.

"'Good Lord willing, I'm going to have a lot more basketball seasons. This is on you. It's up to you to take the initiative and work hard and have lofty goals. You have to run with it,'" Adkins said he told his players earlier this year.

"Because of them, we've done this. Some of them have never won a championship before. To look at those faces, those guys who have never won a championship, I'm real happy for those guys."

The Tigers controlled most of the game, giving up its lead only twice. Both Tech leads came midway through the first half and were short lived.

Darryl Slack hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Bears their last lead, 18-17, with 12:11 remaining in the opening half. Leon Hart quickly regained control for the Tigers, as CU went on to build an eight-point halftime lead, 39-31.

Six 3-pointers led the first-half charge, including one from Tribune, Kan., native Brett Crittenden with 1:19 left in the opening period. He went on to finish with a game-high and season-high 18 points.

"Brett's really been playing well. He went through January and early February with his shoulder really bothering him. He was always grimacing and playing through pain with as shoulder injury but never complained about it or said a word to me. Our training staff, and head trainer Derek Port, did a great job working with him. He's healthy now, and you can see his confidence today," Adkins said.

Hart opened the second half with his only other basket of the game, giving CU its first 10-point lead, 41-31.

Tech worked the lead down to three, 41-38, with 17:28 left to play, but the Tigers scored eight straight to gain distance. A fast break steal and dunk by Caleb Harris pushed the lead out to 15 for the Tigers, 56-41, with 14:28 left.

Harris finished with 15 points off the bench to join Crittenden's 18. All together, CU had 42 points from its bench.

"Incredible," Adkins said. "That's hard to overcome for a lot of teams. At the small college level you see a tremendous drop off when you look at six through 10 coming off the bench."

Another impressive number was the Tigers' 52 percent shooting from 3-point range (12-of-23). It was the second straight game Campbellsville has been 50 percent or better beyond the arc, moving CU into the Top 10 for the stat in the NAIA at 38.4 percent.

"That says a lot," Adkins said. "We know we're going to get open 3's. That's why we can't afford to take bad ones."

Senior center Nestor Colmenares closed his final regular season with his ninth double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three blocks and two steals.

Nicholas Slack led Tech with 15 points, followed by Slack with 13 and 11 from Robby Marshall.

CU (24-6, 12-2 MSC) will face the University of Rio Grande in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at 10 a.m. Friday at the Frankfort Civic Center.
