Home runs lift Campbellsville past Taylor

Box Score A pair of three-run bombs helped push Campbellsville University past Taylor University, 13-7, Monday in the Tigers' first-ever baseball game under the lights at Tiger Field.

Wet playing conditions pushed the start of the non-conference game back to a 5 p.m. start, but the extra time working on the field didn't slow the Tigers' bats. Campbellsville raked out 17 hits in the win.

Campbellsville native Logan Smith hit the first three-run home run for the Tigers, taking a 4-1 lead in the third inning. After the Tigers saw their lead slip away, Brian Chase regained the lead for good, 10-7, blasting a three-run shot over the leftfield fence in the sixth to break a 7-7 tie.

Taylor started the game with a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on a two-run shot by Ryne Otis. CU had a chance to extend the inning in the third after Smith's home run, but Tyler Craig was called out on a close play at the plate that would have been CU's fifth run. The Trojans the momentum of the out and took the lead, 6-4, with a four-run fourth inning. The tying and go-ahead runs came on an error
at shortstop by Colin Bryan.

CU got one of its runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Jameel Ziadeh scored on a sac fly by Alex Ponich to shallow left field.

Zac Townsend saved a run for the Tigers in the fifth, robbing Jordan Coffey of a two-run home run in rightfield. However, Otis advanced to third on the play and scored on a ground out by Derek Kinzer. Eric Staples escaped the inning with a strikeout.

CU evened the score in the fifth with a run from Chase and a fielder's choice by Luke Gadow to score Tyler Craig and tie things up, 7-7.

Offensively, Smith led the Tigers with three hits and four RBIs, as he was a single away from the cycle. Richie Rowland also had three hits.

Rusty Devitt (1-1) took over on the mound in the sixth inning and struck out six of his 11 batters faced for his first win of the season.

Justin Berman started the game for CU, allowing two earned runs and allowing four total through three innings of work. He exited the game with two runners on base in the fourth. Eric Staples worked the fourth and fifth for the Tigers, while Spencer Frantz closed things out in the ninth.

Caleb Stertzer (1-2) recorded the loss after two innings of work. He left the game with a shoulder injury following Chase's home run in the sixth.

Campbellsville (17-12) will host Asbury College in a non-conference game Tuesday at 3 p.m. Taylor drops to 18-5 on the year.
