Box Score 2 Campbellsville University completed a four-game sweep of St. Catharine College in its final Mid-South Conference home series of the regular season Saturday. The Tigers closed out the series by extending their win streak to 11 games with a 6-2 win in game one and 14-6 victory in game two.
The four wins over the weekend, coupled with a series split between Georgetown College and the University of Rio Grande, pushes Campbellsville into first place in the Mid-South Conference standings. The Tigers hold a half game lead of Rio Grande with eight games to go.
It took a while for either team to push a run across in the first game, but the Tigers got back-to-back extra base hits in the fifth inning to put CU on the board. Michael Caleb placed a two-RBI triple into right field and scored on a double by Brian Chase for a 2-0 lead.
Patriot pitchers Timmy Paxton and Brad Krohman combined for five walks to start the bottom of the sixth inning, giving up the Tigers' fourth and fifth runs. With the bases loaded, Caleb picked up his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to right.
Eric Mattos gave two Patriots a free pass in the seventh and allowed one run on a sac fly, but picked up a two-out ground ball to third to end the game for his fifth complete-game victory of the year. He allowed two runs off four hits and two walks, while recording eight strikeouts to improve his record to 7-1 and remain perfect (5-0) in MSC action.
In the second game, CU responded to a two-run first inning by St. Catharine with a six-spot of their own off seven hits in the bottom of the first. The Tigers also added a pair of runs in the third. Richie Rowland carried the big bat in the second game, hitting a solo home run in the fourth and a three-run shot in the fifth. Rowland and Caleb each raked in four RBIs off four hits.
Chance Harker collected his first double of the season in the sixth to drive in Jameel Ziadeh with one out.
Curtis Payne (3-3) picked up the win, allowing five runs, three earned, off five hits through four innings of work. Alex Tolmachoff and Spencer Frantz did not allow an earned runas they closed out the win.
Campbellsville (27-12, 17-2 MSC) travels to Asbury College on Tuesday for a non-conference game at 2 p.m. EDT.
The Tigers return home Tuesday, April 20 for their first home night game in school history. CU will host Trevecca Nazarene University at 6:30 p.m. at Tiger Field.
