Tiger tennis lands All-Americans

Campbellsville University's No. 1 doubles duo continues to draw accolades for the 2010 season. Senior Enrique Rubio of Spain and sophomore Pablo Numbela of Bolivia were both listed on the NAIA and NCCAA All-America lists, recently released.

Rubio led the team by being named a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) First Team All-American and a NAIA Second Team All-American. According to the NAIA Archive, he is the first CU men's tennis player to be named a NAIA All-American.

He is joined on the NCCAA First Team by Numbela, who was a NAIA All-America Honorable Mention.

Rubio completed the 2010 season with a 17-2 record at No. 1 singles while helping Campbellsville (11-5) to a second-place finish in the Mid-South Conference and a semifinal appearance at the NCCAA National Tournament. He and Numbela, a native of
Cochabamba, Bolivia, paired up for a 19-2 doubles record at No. 1 doubles, to earn another NCCAA First Team All-America honor for doubles play.

As of the May 7 Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, Rubio is ranked No. 33 in the NAIA, while the pair is No. 24 among NAIA doubles rankings.

"(Enrique's) level is unbelievable. We've never had a guy that I know of who's been consistent at No.1 and compete at a high level," CU head coach Kyle Caven said. "He helped bring the team together. It was one of the closest teams I've seen. He bridged the gap between some of our Spanish speakers and the American guys."

Numbela, who holds a 3.4 GPA and is a resident assistant on campus away from the court, posted a 12-7 record at No. 2 singles. He has grown into a team leader this year and improved as a player from playing with Rubio, Caven said.

"He's been able to push the other guys to actually get better," Caven said of Numbela.

Both Rubio and Numbela were All-Conference selections for singles and doubles in the Mid-South Conference. Rubio was named Co-Player of the Year in the MSC.

Also receiving NCCAA All-America honors is
Filip Pavlovic (Serbia) as a Second Team singles selection. He and Angel Marquez (Venezuela) are also a Second Team doubles selection by the NCCAA.
