Box Score A week ago, freshman
Jamie Allen was looking for a hat to wear to cover up his bleached blonde hair. Friday, he shined brighter than the old hair color, as he posted a hat trick in his Campbellsville University debut to hand visiting Freed-Hardeman University its first loss of the season, 4-0.
"I just wanted to win first and foremost. I'm really pleased with the team," said Allen.
A hat trick is nothing new to the freshman from one of England's oldest cities, Leicester. His last came in the spring while playing club ball. However, a one-person, three-goal showcase is something Campbellsville fans haven't seen at home since Sept. 2, 2008 when Camillo Mueller scored three goals for the Tigers in a 4-0 home opener victory against Tennessee Wesleyan.
"When I first saw (James) I saw a lot of similarities between he and Camillo, but with a little more spring in his legs" CU head coach
Adam Preston said. "I was a little hesitant at first with him being a freshman, but he's going to score a lot of goals this year."
Senior captain and midfielder
Alex Adams agrees. Adams, who opened the scoring in the game with a goal in the 24th minute, helped set the tone in the midfield along with fellow senior
Gustavo Valecillos, the only 2010 CU roster player with a hat trick before Friday.
"We know now that even if we're not playing well, we always have someone (Jamie) that is lethal up top," Adams said.
Allen's first goal came with 1:15 remaining before halftime to give the Tigers' a cushion. He later added two more goals in the 63rd and 70th minutes.
One of the biggest keys for the night though, was the Tiger defense, which allowed just four shots and only on goal for freshman keeper
Kyle Thomas to stop.
The starting back line included two faces:
Drew Sin of Johannesburg, South Africa;
John Kennedy of Lochgilphead, Scotland. Sophomore Alan Karapandzic joined in as well.
"Some of our biggest problems in the past has been giving up goals," Adams said. "These new guys are really stepping up."
Campbellsville (1-0) will travel to the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind., next weekend to meet Indian Tech at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 and St. Francis at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4.
