Box Score An offensive surge in the final minutes of play brought fans to the edge of their Finley Stadium seats Friday night, but the Lady Tigers were unable to capitalize on their "oh, so close" attempts to tie the season opener. Freed-Hardeman University escaped with a 1-0 win over Campbellsville University to remain unbeaten on the year.
Campbellsville outshot the Lions 20-11 in the match, but a shot in the 29th minute was all the Lions needed on the night, as Helena Yegros played a ball through the middle to Whitney Newby for the winning goal with 16:16 remaining in the first half. Newby threatened four other times, but freshman Lady Tiger goal keeper
Brandie Hagerman kept the game in check with eight saves in the game.
Once the clock hit two minutes to play, CU went on a one-minute offensive binge, but missed wide and high each time from close range. Freed-Hardeman University gained possession with about 40 seconds left and ran out the clock to secure its first unbeaten start after four games (3-0-1).
Audra Hockenberger, a freshman from Kingston Springs, Tenn., led the Lady Tigers' offense with seven shots and three on goal, while returners
Cassie Yannelli and
Megan Campbell each had three shots and two on goal.
Tiffany Harris recorded the shutout for the Lions with eight saves.
Campbellsville (0-1) travels to Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga., next weekend to take on Bryan College Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. and the host team Sept. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
