CU women harriers take second in Centre Invitational

Campbellsville's women completed a second straight week with a second-place finish and the university men were fourth in the Centre College Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning in Danville, Ky.

"This is a very hilly course and times are going to be a little slower," said CU coach Hilary Cebulko.
"Second place is great for the women and the men finally got to compete with our entire squad."

The Lady Tigers were led by freshman Maggie Mattingly (Elizabethtown, Ky.) who finished second in the 6K race. In the NAIA the women normally run a 5K, but since Centre is NCAA Div. 3 an extra kilometer was added to the course. CU had four runners in the top 10: Mattingly (24:34.44); Tawny Vilchis, fourth (25:22.74); Amy Etherington, seventh (26:38.92); and Summer Rines, 10th (27:03.25).

Starsha Fant, 18th (27:45.26) rounded out the scoring for Campbellsville. Other runners included: Lauren Little, 19th (27:45.51); Daisy Perez, 28th (28:34.23); and Kasey Vitkus, 45th (30:22.90). Altogether 73 women finished.

"It's hard to tell about our times in comparison with the first week," said Cebulko. "We ran a different distance on a different course. I'll have to go back and see how the splits compare."

Campbellsville's women collected 38 points to winner Centre's 31. Fellow MSC  team, Georgetown, was third with 98 points. There were seven teams in the women's race. Berea, Asbury, Kentucky State and Midway rounded out the women's team finish.

Centre also won the men's race with Berea second and Georgetown third.

Qualaun Reed, a senior from Norwalk, Calif., was the top CU runner with an eighth place finish in the time of 28:56.66. Other finishers for CU included: Armando Pina, 15th (29:28.85); Andrew Simmons, 19th (30:20.62); Dashan Craft, 28th (30:43.60); Bradley Harris, 36th (31:29.49); Christian Black, 39th (32:06.17); David McKellar, 54th (38:49.82); and Matt Oliver, 56th (41:38.95)

Asbury and Kentucky State rounded out the men's team finish. Fifty-nine men competed.

Campbellsville travels to Berea on Saturday for the Berea College Invitational.
