Tigers net first goal in 4-1 loss at No. 12 Lindsey Wilson

Box Score Campbellsville University took an early 1-0 lead at Lindsey Wilson College on Wednesday, but a pair of penalty kicks helped secure a 4-1 victory for the 12th-ranked Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson, the defending NAIA national champions, appeared to deliver the first blow in the men's soccer contest, scoring on a corner kick in the eighth minute. However a foul disallowed the goal. Seven minutes later, Lindsey defender Chris Williams' header sailed into the back of the net, but seconds after he was called for being offsides on the play.

With the game still scoreless, Campbellsville senior Gustvao Valecillos of Venezuela played a ball to Colombia native Ramiro Sanchez, who took two touches and fired the Tigers' goal into the top right corner from more than 20 yards out. The 1-0 lead on the defending national champions led to a team celebration in front of the Tigers' bench.

"We knew going in we were going to have to lock it in, play deep and look for opportunities to come," CU head coach Adam Preston said. "It was nice to have the early lead, but it was clear they were the attacking team in the game."

Throughout the first half, Campbellsville received a strong attack from Lindsey Wilson, who had 17 shots in the first half and only giving up three. In addition to the disallowed goals, the Blue Raiders narrowly missed a few shots off the post, as the Tigers held on for a 1-0 halftime lead.

The lead marked the second consecutive night a Campbellsville soccer team held Lindsey Wilson scoreless for at least 45 minutes, as the CU women were in a scoreless tie at LWC until the 64th minute on Tuesday night.

However, the scoring drought ended for the Blue Raiders shortly after halftime. Forty seconds into the second half, Williams collected a goal off a Joe Tait assist to tie the game, 1-1.

The next two LWC goals came on penalty kicks in the 58th and 80th minutes. Mosse Aduny scored the first PK after Alen Karapandzic was called for taking down Blue Raider forward Sicelo Buthelezi inside the goal box. The second PK came on an intentional hand ball call against Chris Collins-Reed, as the ball hit him after leaping in defense of a high shot.

After Tait converted the second PK into the Blue Raiders' third goal, and with CU playing a man down after Collins-Reed was given a red card for the foul, the Tigers' air seemed to deflate. Carnell Learmond scored the Blue Raiders fourth goal in the 84th minute with an assist by Buthelezi.

Campbellsville finished the game with only five shots. Both attempts on goal came from Sanchez, who had a close range shot blocked in the goal by a LWC defender in the 61st minute. The loss is the first of the season for Campbellsville and also snapped CU freshman forward Jamie Allen's five-match scoring streak.

CU goalkeeper James Clements faced nine shots on goal, posting five saves.

Preston said the loss exposes a few areas the Tigers need to work on for the future.

"We have a lot to do," he said. "You can see a lot of things that need to be corrected, but it's a lot of correctable things. That's where we go from here. We prepare for the next game and get better a little each day."

Campbellsville (5-1, 0-1 MSC) will host Bluefield College on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Finley Stadium. The game will follow the Tiger football team's game against the NCAA Division III national champions, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which begins at 1 p.m. ET.
