Box Score It took nearly 71 minutes to get on the board, but two goals was enough for Campbellsville University, as the Tiger men's soccer team shut out Brescia University, 2-0, Monday night at Finley Stadium.
The Tigers were held scoreless in the first half for the first time this season, but broke the the 0-0 tie in the 71st minute with a goal by
Pontus Yngve from the corner. With an assist from
Alex Adams, Yngve took advantage of Brescia keeper Mike Guilliat being out of position for the first goal. CU added some insurance with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game when senior forward
Gustavo Valecillos netted his third goal of the season.
"That's called winning ugly," CU head coach
Adam Preston said. "Brescia is a good team, and all complements on how they played, but we made them look very good. To our guys' credit, they were tired. They knew what they were doing but their heads and legs weren't working together."
The game turned in the 66th minute when a Brescia defender and assistant coach were ejected for red cards. Sophomore defender David Bramley was carded for a hard tackle on Valecillos, which resulted in the Bearcats switching to only one forward and locking up its defense with three defenders and four midfielders.
"Brescia took a tough call to our advantage that turned the game," Preston said. "Until that point, it could have gone either way. Our guys came back and worked hard at the end to win it."
CU goal keeper
James Clements posted his second consecutive solo shutout at home, collecting three solid saves and clearing numerous crosses in the box.
"James had a great night in goal for us. When they came out at us hard and we were out of our game, James kept us in," Preston said.
CU had 11 shots on goal, led by three each from Yngve, Valecillos and
Jamie Allen. Guilliat had nine stops in goal for the Bearcats.
Campbellsville (7-1) will host the University of Rio Grande (6-0) in a Mid-South Conference game Saturday. Rio sits at No. 2 in the nation as of Monday with the new NAIA Top 25 scheduled to be released Tuesday.
