Lady Tigers put on offensive show in downing Virginia Wise, 97-79

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville held  its undefeated conference slate together Monday night as the Lady Tigers put away Virginia-Wise, 97-79, in a rescheduled game from Saturday.

"A lot of good things happened tonight," said coach Ginger Colvin, "but our defense was terrible and that was something we really wanted to concentrate on."

The win was the 21st straight MSC regular season (spanning two seasons) win for CU (13-2, 6-0) and the 91st win for fourth-year coach Ginger Colvin against 25 losses.

The Lady Tigers' Melly Heaton found her shooting eye, connecting on seven 3s in 12 attempts and tied Courtney Clifton with team scoring honors with 21 points.

Campbellsville led by as many as 19 points in the first half and held a 25-point lead in the second at 97-75.

"When you hit shots and come out hot like we did I think sometimes you lose a little focus," said Colvin. "I'm real pleased to have been able to play a lot of people."

CU out-scored Wise 29-11 off the bench, led by Corin Dunn's (9 points) and Hayley Hellyer's (8). Whitney Ballinger had a douuble-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

"We've got a ton of things we have to work on," said Colvin. "A win is a win, but we could have played much better."

Wise was led by Amber Carter's 25 points.

"They have a nice offensive team," said Colvin, "and we wanted to do a little better job defensively."

Kristin Mullins and Chelsea Cluesman also reached double figures for the Lady Cavaliers (5-8, 0-6).

"We have a heckuva tough road swing and it's nice to have the confidence when you look down the bench that people are going to contribute."

The Lady Tigers head out on the road for the rest of January, starting with a Saturday match-up with St. Catharine. Then they have Lindsey Wilson (Jan. 20), The University of the Cumberlands (Jan. 22), Shawnee State (Jan. 27) and Georgetown (Jan. 29). They will return home Feb. 3  against Rio Grande.
