Danis rescues Lady Tigers at Cumberlands, 73-60

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Campbellsville survived a full-court three that ended the first half and then rode an nine-point streak by Courtney Danis at the start of the second half as the Lady Tigers beat Cumberlands 73-60.

Danis scored nine of the Lady Tigers first 10 points to erase a 34-27 half-time deficit and forge a 42-38 lead that CU would never relinquish. Danis had 15 points and was joined in double figures by Whitney Ballinger, Courtney Clifton and Mackenzie Lee with 19, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"I can't say enough about Courtney," said coach Ginger Colvin. "That 3 she hit at the start of the second half changed the whole complexion of the game."

Cumberlands (13-8, 7-2) used 4 of 7 shooting from behind the arc to pull away in the first half, leading at one time 28-20. But five points by Lee at the end of the half edged the Lady Tigers closer.

"We played much better defense in the second half," said Colvin. "But we were horrible on the boards. We were so focused on thier posts that the guards were getting in there and beating us."

Campbellsville (15-2, 8-0) got beat on the boards 41-37 and both teams were whistled for a combined 51 fouls.

After hitting only 27 percent in the first half, the Lady Tigers were twice as good in the second, 54 percent. Danis logged CU's only 3-pointer as the team was 1-13 from 3.

Cumberlands was led by Lauren Wombles' 16 points.

Colvin said Ballinger was suffering for the flu prior to the game. Melly Heaton, who hit a layup that gave the Lady Tigers a 38-36 lead, sprained her ankle on the play and did not play the final 14 minutes of the game.

"She certainly wasn't as aggressive as we wanted her to be, but she came up big for us when we needed it. We're not a team that gets rattled. We had a great demeanor at the half and just talked about what we had to do,"

The Lady Tigers remain on the road for the rest of January, starting with a Thursday match-up with  Shawnee State (Jan. 27), Georgetown (Jan. 29) and a weather-postponed game at Lindsey Wilson (Jan. 31). They will return home Feb. 3  against Rio Grande.
