Fighting Tigers roll out 42-6 victory over UVA-Wise

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Campbellsville University used an early defensive spark to finish out a 42-6 home win Saturday against UVA-Wise at HIG Field in Finley Stadium as the Tigers even up the season, 5-5, and move into second-place in the Mid-South Conference East Division at 3-2.

The day seemed to start off all but in the Tiger's favor as Wise blocked a Carl Ojala punt on fourth-and-1 on Campbellsville's 47 yard line. The Cavaliers recovered at the CU 27.

However, Wise would not take advantage, finding themselves on a fourth down of their own at the Campbellsville 11. Choosing to attempt a 38-yard field goal, Wise had its kick blocked by Tiger senior Dwight Houston, who scooped the loose ball for a 15-yard return. It was the first of many mirror endings to drives in the first quarter by the two teams.

Campbellsville used back-to-back first downs following the blocked field goal to find itself inside the red zone for the first time. From the UVA-Wise 13 yard line, Will Warf lobbed a pass to a wide open Stan Warrenhuffman in the back right corner of the end zone. Warrenhuffman made a one-handed catch as the ball traveled out of bounds. Warf looked to Warrenhuffman again two plays later, but this time under throwing him for an interception and UVA-Wise touchback.

Wise in turn saw its drive come to an end, this time after two big plays in the secondary. Tiger senior Jeffrey Demary deflected a pass on first down in CU territory. UVA-Wise quarterback Micah Cunningham once again threw into the hands of a Tiger defender two plays later. This time the ball fell into the hands of Tiger red-shirt freshman Michael Chandler for a 21-yard interception return to midfield.

On their third offensive series, Campbellsville was determined to find the end zone. After a 16-yard chain-moving run by Wayne Coffee, and a 14-yard hookup through the air from Warf to Diaz Bolden, the momentum finally seemed to be in favor of the Tigers.

Gerwan Brewer carried the ball the next three plays for 17 yards and moved the Tigers inside the 5. Campbellsville stuck with its run-run-run game plan, this time with Coffee in the backfield. Coffee's third rush was for 2 yards and a touchdown, giving Campbellsville the first points of the game. David Hon's kick attempt put the Tigers up 7-0 with 3:19 left to play in the first quarter.

UVA-Wise didn't let the Tiger's celebration last too long, returning a 67-yard kickoff by Ojala for a 97 yard trip to pay dirt. The quick answer was silenced on the extra point attempt, as Houston picked up his second blocked kick of the day to keep Campbellsville in front, 7-6, for the remainder of the quarter.

Campbellsville used only thirteen seconds on its fifth offensive drive of the day, as Warf found Demetrius Gipson for a 28 yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Hon's kick made it 14-6 Tigers.

After both teams traded punts, Wise chose an option play on first down. Tiger freshman Darius Skinner was in place to force a fumble on what was already going to be a six yard loss. Earl McCann recovered the loose ball with daylight, only having to make a move on the quarterback on his way to a 52-yard defensive touchdown. Hon's kick was good, extending the lead to 21-6. That score remained at halftime.

The Tigers' defense was swarming to start the second half. After Ojala's kickoff sailed into the end zone for a touchback, Houston and Chandler swallowed up Wise's first down run in the backfield for a loss of 2. Looking to the air on second down, Cunningham's passed was intercepted by Skinner at the Wise 28 yard line.

Tiger quarterback, Nathan Cooper came out with guns slinging in the third quarter. Gipson was found for a 12-yard first down through the air, then again for 13 more resulting in six more points for Campbellsville. Hon's kick put the score at 28-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Coffee was off to the races in the fourth quarter en route to becoming a 1,000-yard rusher for the Tigers. On three runs, Coffee picked up three first downs and a combined 47 yards, including a 24-yard run to the goal line. He punched the Tigers' next touchdown in from the 1 to extend Campbellsville's lead to 35-6, following Hon's kick, with 1:32 left in the game.

Regardless of game being out of reach with two minutes left, the action was far from over. Skinner intercepted Cunningham's first play from scrimmage, his second pick on the day. Skinner returned the ball for 20 yards but fell short of the goal line at the UVA-Wise 1. Wayne Coffee once again finished the job, scoring on the ground for the third time. Hon remained perfect on the day with his sixth kick, putting Campbellsville up 42-6, and giving the Tigers their largest margin of victory since 2001.

Other than the first quarter touchdown, Wise had only one more shot at points in the game, missing a field goal off the upright in the second quarter.

The Tiger defense collected four sacks late in the game, as freshmen Kendall Marbury and Connor Porter recorded their first career sacks, Houston had 1.5 and Nick Reed had a half sack.

Campbellsville (5-5) will look to close out the regular season with a winning record next Saturday, Nov. 12 at Finley Stadium, as West Virginia University Tech comes to town for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30p.m. ET.
