Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. --
Reggie Smith drained three 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds Wednesday, but Campbellsville University's rally fell short in a 72-63 loss to King College in the Tigers' final non-conference game of the season.
"We saw something tonight we hadn't seen all year, and that's rare this late in February. We've seen disciplined teams. We've seen physical teams. They are extremely disciplined, physical and do things the right way within their system. We did not respond well at all with their physical play," CU head coach Keith Adkins said.
Smith led the Tigers throughout the night with a Campbellsville career-high 28 points, only two points shy of his junior college high. The transfer from Louisville gave the Tigers their only lead of the game, 3-2, in the opening minutes.
"(Reggie) got in a rhythm late to where if there was a little more, we may have been able to sneak further into this thing," Adkins said. "But the last three games, I don't think he's rebounding and playing defense well. We've got to get everybody and everything together at the same time. That's not pointing the finger at Reggie in anyway, it's everyone wearing a Campbellsville jersey."
The Tigers fell behind by as many as 16 points, 45-29, midway through the second half. Campbellsville went on a 21-6 run over a seven-minute stretch to pull within five points, 51-46, but that was the closest the Tigers came to victory.
Caleb Smith was second in scoring for CU with 12 points.
Shawn Savage, who was honored before the game for joining the 1,000-point club last week, had nine points to move to No. 28 on the Tigers' all-time scoring list with 1,016 career points.
Mark Dockery had 26 points to lead King College.
The loss drops Campbellsville (15-12) two spots to No. 5 in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) power rankings, while King rises to No. 8. CU currently leads the NCCAA Mid-East Region power rating and is the front runner to host the Mid-East Region Tournament if the Tigers fail to make the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.
"We're not worried about the power ratings at this point. It absolutely does not come up among our team. We're focused on getting the absolute highest seed we can get for the Mid-South Conference Tournament and see if we can make our way to Kansas City. If (the NCCAA) is the direction we head in, we'll go with aspirations of winning not only in the regional format but the national level," Adkins said.
Campbellsville will return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Powell Athletic Center to host St. Catharine College in a state-wide televised game on the Wazoo Sports Network.
