Tigers' season ends in NCCAA Mid-East final, 70-59

Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University cut a once 20-point deficit to five in the final minutes, but were unable to complete its rally Saturday in a 70-59 loss to King College in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Mid-East Region Championship.

Shawn Savage hit a 3 one minute into the game to gain a 3-2 lead, but that was the only Tiger lead of the game. After keeping the game within a basket, 9-6, with 17:28 to play, Campbellsville was outscored 22-5 over the next 12 minutes. That was the first of three 20-point deficits in the game, as the Tigers trailed 31-11. While Campbellsville shot 23 percent from the floor in the first half, the Tigers ended the half on an 11-5 run to trail 36-22 at the break.

Campbellsville was 4-of-18 from 3-point range in the first half, but connect on its first three long-range shots of the second half to cut the deficit to 11, 44-33. Eleven was the closest Campbellsville could get to last year's NCCAA National Tournament runner-up, until Reggie Smith scored on an and-one play to pull within 10, 60-50. Following the 3-point play, Savage scored the next eight Tiger points to pull within five, 63-58, with a minute to play.

King answered with a basket by Clarence Smith and hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch. CU scored only once more on a free throw with 20 seconds to play.

Savage finished with 22 in his final Tiger game, giving him 1,105 points in his four-year career, placing him 23rd on the Tigers' all-time scoring list. He also finishes the season as the leading 3-point shooter in the NAIA this season with 108 made 3-pointers. King College's all-time leading scorer Mark Dockery led the Tornados once again, scoring 23 points. He connected on three 3-pointers to secure his spot as the top 3-point shooter this season in the NCCAA and tied the lead for most 3's nation-wide at any level of four-year competition.

Adrian Whelan also ended his career Saturday, scoring 12 points for the Tigers on 4-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Clarence Smith was second for King with 16 points.

Campbellsville ends its season with a 17-16 record. The Tigers gained the No. 1 seed in the NCCAA Mid-East region and finished sixth in the Mid-South Conference regular season. King (17-14) advances to the NCCAA National Tournament, which will be played March 17-19 in Oakland City, Ind.
