Tigers claim MSC series at St. Catharine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. CATHARINE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University started the day with a 2-0 shutout of St. Catharine College and wrapped up its first Mid-South Conference series win with a 10-5 win in game two of a Sunday doubleheader.

Michael McBride (2-1) picked up the game one win, allowing only three hits, but six walks through six innings. In the third, he pitched out of a jam with two on, retiring the Patriots on a squeeze play at the plate. He also pitched out of a bases loaded situation in the fifth to secure his first MSC win.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth after Danny Lapchak scored on an RBI by Jameel Ziadeh. CU added an insurance run in the sixth when Rylan Chin doubled and scored on an RBI by Gabriel Arcoleo. The only other hit for the Tigers came from Anthony Rossetto. Craig Edwards, who leads the MSC in batting average, saw his hit streak come to an end at eight games.

Campbellsville had a chance to extend its lead in the sixth, but left the bases loaded for three of their four runners left on base in the game. The Patriots stranded eight runners.

Drew Pettit walked one but retired the other three for his second save of the season. Andrew Shoemaker did not allow a run in two innings of relief.

In the second game, Chin doubled once more, giving him a double in each of the four games at St. Catharine, as he finished the day with a team-high four hits. Chin also drove in three of CU's 10 runs.

Campbellsville scored two in the first, one in the second, one in the third and three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Colton Brown started the day on the mound, but retired only one batter before exiting. He allowed two runs off a hit and three walks in the first inning for the Patriots to tie the game, 2-2. Ryan Richardson closed out the first inning and recorded the win in relief. He allowed only one run off two hits and two walks through 3 and 2/3 innings. Shoemaker, Jacob Cook, Pettit and Jeff Bjorklund closed out the game in relief.

Michael Durham, Steve Oiler, Anthony Jakosa, Michael Caleb, Lapchak, Arcoleo and McBride each had an RBI in the win.

Campbellsville (7-9, 4-2 MSC) is now one game out of first-place in the MSC West behind Lindsey Wilson College, which CU will host next weekend. The Tigers return to action Tuesday, March 15 in Frankfort, Ky., for a doubleheader at Kentucky State University
