Tiger soccer shuts out Shawnee State to close Homecoming

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. –  The Campbellsville University men's soccer team completed a three-sport Homecoming sweep at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field on Saturday night with a 4-0 win over Shawnee State University.

The Fighting Tigers football team and Women's Soccer team both had home wins earlier in the day.

Campbellsville's first goal came in the third minute of the second half. Junior defender John Kennedy headed a ball in the net off a corner kick played by sophomore Gustav Carlsson. This is the third straight game that the current Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week has scored; all three were shutout wins.

"I've always been consistent putting shots on target over the last two years," Kennedy said. "I put up 24 shots on target with only one goal so it's about time it started paying off. But it's not just me. It's down to Gustav Carlsson, whose set pieces are outstanding. He just serves it, and it bounces off my head. I don't mind scoring a few goals every now and then, but I put it all on them – the shutouts and the goals."

"John has worked his tail off to get to where he is," CU head coach, Adam Preston said.

Carlsson played a part in the Tigers' second goal as well, a penalty kick in the 65th minute of the contest, CU 2-0.

Preston looked to his bench in the ending minutes of Saturday's game to add a couple of insurance goals over Shawnee State.

Junior Camilo Roman scored his first career goal in the 87th minute when he played the ball into the back of the net from just less than 20 yards out.

But the Tigers weren't finished yet, sophomore Trevor Jarvis added the final insurance goal in with 1:41 left in the game. Jarvis found the net from around 40 yards out, playing the ball into the back corner of the net just past a leaping Shawnee State keeper.

Campbellsville walked off the field with a total of 21 shots in comparison to Shawnee State's five.

CU keeper, Max Malachiyev finished the game with only one save in the shutout.

"At the beginning of the year, we were young and trying to piece things together and we were giving some really dumb goals," Preston said. "It means a lot that we are starting to wise up and making it hard for teams to score. If you make it hard for teams to score, you always give yourself a chance to win."

Campbellsville (10-3-1, 5-1 MSC) will host its final home Mid-South Conference game on Tuesday, Oct. 16 against Bluefield College at 8 p.m. EDT.
