Tigers sweep opening weekend of MSC action

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville University men's basketball stretched its season-opening win streak to four games with a 73-59 win over the University of Virginia's College at Wise Saturday afternoon at Powell Athletic Center.

The win completes a sweep for the Tigers in their Mid-South Conference opening weekend and improves CU to 4-0 for the first time since November 2006.

 


The Tigers opened the game wiith a 5-1 deficit and trailed by four points twice in the first two minutes before CU head coach Keith Adkins did a complete lineup change. Following the line change, Dino Muslic drained his first 3-pointer as a Tiger to give CU a 12-11 lead. Darius Clement followed with a 3 in the corner to stretch the Tigers to an 8-0 run.

However the pendalum of scoring runs swung back to the favor of the Cavaliers, who scored seven unanswered points to pull ahead, 23-18 before the Tigers responded with a 6-0 run.

Vernon Payne, who led CU with 20 points off the bench, gave the Tigers the lead with a 3-pointer with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. He followed with another 3 to stretch the lead en route to a 31-28 CU lead at the break.

In the second half, Campbellsville grew its lead to 11 points, 52-41, on a two-point basket by Addison Smith with 10:56 to play. CU maintained a two to three possession lead through most of the second half and grew its lead in the final minute, hitting 4-of-6 free throws.

Smith followed Payne's lead with 13 points and had seven assists. Payne narrowly missed his first double-double with nine rebounds.

Matt Day led UVA-Wise with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Jermaine Wright and James Turner each scored 11.

The Tigers out rebounded the Cavaliers, 43-34, on the night and shot 46.3 percent from the floor compaired to 34.5 for Wise.

CU (4-0, 2-0 MSC) will host No. 11 Lindsey Wilson College on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. in Powell Athletic Center.
