Four Tigers place at Ashland Open

ASHLAND, Ohio – Four Tigers placed in the final fall open tournament for the Campbellsville University wrestling team Saturday at the Ashland University Open.

First-year Tiger Colby Rinehart placed third at 141 pounds for the second straight week, while Shawn McGhee placed fourth for the second time this season at 149 pounds. Kyle Terry also placed in the Top 6 for the second straight week. He was sixth at Ashland after finishing fourth at the Patriot Open. Nate Knauf returned to the mats after a week off and placed sixth at 174 pounds.

Rinehart defeated two Ashland wrestlers in the 141 pounds championship bracket before falling in the semifinal, 3-0, to Nick Barber of Eastern Michigan University. Rinehart advanced to the third-place match with a major decision win, 14-4, over Indiana University grappler Trevor Moody and then beat University of Indianapolis' Justin Kieffer, 6-4.

In the 149-pound bracket, McGhee defeated Terry, 8-5, in the wrestleback semifinals before falling to Joe White of the University of Findlay in the third-place match. The two Tigers each finished the day with a 4-2 record. McGhee had two pins and a major decision.

Knauf was 2-1 to wrestle his way into the wrestleback semifinals at 174 pounds but had to forfeit his last two matches to finish sixth.

In all, 15 Tigers competed in the tournament, with junior Sam Conners posting the best record among CU wrestlers not placing in the Top 8 at 4-2. Tyler Alsip and Brandon Westerman were both 2-2 on the day, while Connor Maglecic was 1-0 before defaulting out with injury. Jarvis Elam and Trey Rhodes were 1-2. Chase Boone, Chris Teague, Joe Whalen, Jonathan Hill and Michael Johnson were 0-2.

"We are finished with our November competition that included three open tournaments this year," said Franky James, CU head coach. "We have seen enough open competition, and now we have to make a decision on who our Top 15 to 20 wrestlers are, and make sure those guys are ready to start the season on December 1 at the ONU Invitational."

The Tigers will travel to Ada, Ohio on Dec. 1 for the Ohio Northern Invitational, which it finished in the top two each of the past three years.
