"It didn't turn out the way we wanted it to, but when it comes down to it, that's the way a Lindsey/Campbellsville game typically is played," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "When you look at the outcome, I think the team that makes the least mistakes wins, and I think that's what happened. Down the stretch, with Kalen Kimberland's leadership, I thought they made fewer mistakes and we couldn't get a shot to fall when we needed it most."
The Tigers used an 8-1 run in to build a five-point lead, 22-17, with six minutes remaining in the first half, but the Blue Raiders worked the score even, 25-25, with two minutes before halftime before going into the locker room with a 28-25 lead.
The Tigers cut their deficit to one point five times in the second half, pulling even, 47-47, with a basket by Addison Smith with 7:05 left to play. The game bounced from a four- to one-point lead throughout most of the second half, until Lindsey Wilson used a 10-2 run to go up by eight with 1:12 remaining. Most of those points came at the charity stripe.
Four Tigers scored in double figures, led by Jordan Myers' 15 points and 12 points from Vernon Payne off the bench. Smith had 11 and Darius Clement had a career-high 10 points.
Clement, a sophomore from Bowling Green, Ky., shot 4-of-9 from the floor and had two assists in his 38 minutes on the floor. In addition to his offensive effort, Clement was given the task of guarding LWC guard Chase Cox, the third-leading scorer on the team and leading 3-point shooter. Cox was held scoreless on the night, attempting only two shots and one assist.
"The key for us is not contesting (Cox's) shots, but taking away his opportunities. I think you can credit Darius Clement with that effort on him," Adkins said.
LWC was led in scoring by Kimberland and Wesley Hanspard with 19 points each. Darren Ballou had 10.
Campbellsville (4-1, 2-1 MSC) will return to action Friday, Nov. 23 in the Lindsey Wilson College Classic against No. 12 Freed-Hardeman University at 6 p.m. EST in Columbia, Ky.
