YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Campbellsville University kicked off the 2012-2013 wrestling season Saturday, Nov. 3 in the Eastern Michigan University Open. A total of 12 Tiger wrestlers faced tough competition in two divisions: a Freshman/Sophomore Division and the Open Division, which included all upper class wrestlers.
Campbellsville had four round placers in this year's Eastern Michigan Open. Five Tigers competed in the Open Division, led by Conor Young, who lost his first match of the day, but wrestled back to finish fifth with a win over Dustin Schultz from Purdue.
"I felt like I could have done better than I did, but I'm proud of the way I wrestled," Young said.
At 125 pounds, Jarvis Elam wrestled tough against some good opponents but went two-and-out. In the 133-pound bracket, Dee Leavell won his first match, and then made the consolations round to only meet up with teammate Tyler Alsip. Alsip advanced to meet other opponents from Purdue and lost in the round before placements.
Weighing in at 149, Chris Teague wrestled up a weight from last season, advancing to the quarterfinals before losing his first match. The 2012 NAIA national runner-up went through the consolation rounds wrestling tough before falling by decision in the consolation quarterfinals.
Three CU wrestlers placed in the Freshman/Sophomore Division: Shawn McGhee placed fourth at 149 pounds, Joe Whalen placed sixth at 157 pounds and Connor Maglecic was eighth at 197 pounds.
McGhee started the day with a pin and had a near tech fall before recording a decision over a Grand Valley University wrestler. His two loses came to Division I grapplers from Eastern Michigan and Michigan.
"I was going to go out there and wrestle tough," McGhee said. "I wish I would have won the (semifinal) match, but I can't let that hold me down."
Despite falling short in the last two matches, the freshman was positive.
"I feel like if you win you get more time to gather yourself and can focus on what is next." McGhee said. "I was thinking that I had a lot to improve on, and I guess I will have to learn from my mistakes and find out what I have to do in order to improve as the season comes along."
Whalen came out strong, beating his first opponent with a 5-2 decision. Whalen lost in the next round and made it to the consolation fifth-and-sixth-place match, where he lost to Michigan State University's Matt Pasqualini.
In addition to McGhee, Whalen and Maglecic, CU had also had strong showings from Travis McIntosh (197 pounds), Nate Knauff (184 pounds), Trey Rhodes (165 pounds) and Michael Johnson (184 pounds). Johnson made it to the quarters and then lost then lost twice.
Campbellsville University wrestling will travel to Williamsburg, Ky., Nov. 10 for the Patriot Open tournament hosted by fifth-ranked University of the Cumberlands.
