COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Campbellsville University women's soccer team ended its run at the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament with a heart-breaking loss Wednesday night against Cumberland University. The Bulldogs barely defeated CU, 1-0, with the lone goal coming late in the second half.
"It was a hard-fought game for 90 minutes and we battled every second," said head coach Thom Jones. "Unfortunately, we ended up on the losing end. I'm very proud of my girls for keeping their character and composure at times when they could have lost it. They rose above the circumstances that were not in their control and did not let it affect their play. Now we need to get focused on the NCCAA [National Christian College Athletic Association] Tournament."
The first 45 minutes were action-packed, with a total of five Lady Tiger shots and 13 shots by the Bulldogs, four of which were on-goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, but both kept the pressure on offensively.
The start of the second half was similar to the first, with much effort and few results, but the battle quickly intensified as the game progressed. Fouls were exchanged by both teams, Cumberland ultimately finishing with 10 and CU with five.
With just over 10 minutes left on the clock, Cumberland's pressure finally paid off as freshman midfielder Taylor Nay fired a shot to the right of CU Keeper, Brandie Hagerman. The assist came from freshman forward Kelsey Langille, who is the team's leading scorer. Nay leads Cumberland in assists, but the freshmen switched roles for the lone goal of the game.
The goal was the only one to pass Hagerman, who totaled eight saves on the night.
The Lady Tigers fought hard in the last 10 minutes, managing to put up two shots before the buzzer sounded. A hard cross from the left corner of the box deflected off a Cumberland player and toward the Cumberland U. net, but Bulldog keeper, Lindsay Kitson met Jessica Ralph at the top of the goalie box to knock her shot away and secure the 1-0 Cumberland victory.
Cumberland University (17-2-0) will advance to take on third-ranked Lindsey Wilson College in the championship game on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Although CU will not advance to the next round of the MSC Tournament, they will continue their pursuit of a championship next week as they head to the NCCAA Tournament. To follow the team, go to www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
