Tiger wrestling places second in Ohio Northern Invite

ADA, Ohio – Campbellsville University placed in the Top 2 of the Ohio Northern University Invitational for the fourth straight year Saturday. The Tigers, ranked third in the NAIA, placed second behind Olivet College (Mich.), as OC defended its ONU title after dethroning the Tigers last December.

"This tournament is always a good measuring stick for us to see where we are as a team early in the year. I'm happy for this team. With a lot of new faces in the program," CU head coach Franky James said. "Individually, several of these guys are working hard and just keep improving each week. The new coaches are doing a good job."

Senior Conor Young led the Tigers with 25 points and a first-place finish at 157 pounds, while Kyle Terry collected 20 team points as runner-up at 149. Young had three major decisions and a pin en route to his 1-0 decision over West Liberty's Art Hobley in the final. Terry pinned his first two opponents and recorded a 6-1 decision over Heidelberg's Travis Luft before claiming sudden victory, 16-4, over Olivet's Gage Peterson. Terry was forced to forfeit the title match due to injury in the third minute.

Jarvis Elam, Tyler Alsip, Brandon Westerman and Allen Scruggs each placed in the Top 4 for their weights. Connor Maglecic and Josh Ashbrook were sixth and seventh, respectively at 197 and 184 pounds.

Alsip had the only tech fall win by a Tiger wrestler in the tournament, while Scruggs joined Young with two pins on the day.

In addition to the eight place-takers, Paul Gryniuk scored five team points at 174 pounds, while Joe Whelan (165) and Terrell Moore (285) each had three points. Six other Tigers competed on CU's second and third teams.

CU will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 8, to open its duals season at the Indiana Tech Duals in Ft. Wayne, Ind. CU will meet Indiana Tech,  Calumet College of St. Joseph, Hannibal-LaGrange University and Missouri Baptist College.
