Tigers finish fourth at Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS – Campbellsville University wrestling closed its fall semester schedule Sunday with a fourth-place finish at the 34th annual Midwest Classic. The Tigers utilized six top eight individual finishes to end the two-day tournament in the Top 5 and as the highest NAIA team in the 26-team tournament.

Conor Young and Tyler Alsip led Campbellsville with second and third place finishes at 157 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively.
 

Young was 4-1 in the tournament, all wins over D2 opponents, including two pins. A take down late n the first period of the title match, proved to be the difference in a 6-3 loss to Upper Iowa University's Bryce Lumzy, who had more than two minutes of riding time.

Alsip was 5-1 on the weekend en route to his third-place finish. After falling, 8-2, to fifth-ranked Travis Barroquill of Indiana Tech (NAIA), Alsip won four straight to finish third. One of which was a 5-3 upset decision of Trevor Franklin (Upper Iowa), ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II.

Brandon Westerman finished fourth at 141 pounds with a 4-2 record after losing twice to Lindsey Wilson's Wismit Moinius, ranked third in the NAIA. Kyle Terry was fifth at 149 pounds for the Tigers with a 5-2 record in the tournament. He had three pins, including one in the fifth-place match. Josh Ashbrook was eighth at 184 pounds with a 3-2 record.

Joe Whalen (165 pounds), Connor Maglecic (197 pounds) and Kaden Suter (285 pounds) also competed for the Tigers.

The top three spots in the Midwest Classic were claimed by Top 10 teams in NCAA Division II. Fifth-ranked Newberry College won the tournament with 159.5 points, followed by No. 4 Upper Iowa University (118) and eighth-ranked Findlay University (110). CU had 84.5 points. Ashland University was closely behind in fifth with 81 points. The closest NAIA team was Lindsey Wilson in 11th place with 55.5 points.

Campbellsville will take three weeks off before hosting the CU Duals on Jan. 5.
