Tiger wrestling sweeps Indiana Tech Warriors Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – For the third straight season Campbellsville University opened its wrestling duals schedule with four straight wins. This time it was all in the same day, as the fifth-ranked Tigers swept the Indiana Tech Warriors Duals on Saturday.

The Tigers posted wins over Hannibal-LaGrange University, 33-12, and Calumet College of St. Joseph, 39-18, before taking down two ranked NAIA programs – No. 13 Missouri Baptist University, 31-13, and No. 15 Indiana Tech, 19-13.




"I'm proud of our team. In some of those duals, we put a lineup out there with eight of our guys that have never wreslted a dual for us. We had a lot of tough matches, and we found a way to win. That is a good sign for this team," said CU head coach Franky James.

CU started the day with Jarvis Elam recording his only win at 125 pounds in an 11-1 major decision win over Hannibal-LaGrange's Bryan Ginther. DeCoreaus Leavell, who went 4-0 during the day, followed with a 16-7 major decision at 133 pounds and the Tigers' never looked back from their early 8-0 lead. CU took advantage of forfeits at 141 and 149 pounds to go up 20-0 over HLU. Sam Conners' major decision at 157 pounds made it 24-0.

In the second dual of the day, CU claimed 36 points off forfeits, enough to put Calumet St. Joseph away before the dual began. Terrell Moore was the only Tiger to win on the mat in the dual, beating Gabe Mota, 7-3.

Senior 184-pounder Josh Ashbrook was the Tigers' highlight in a 31-13 win over Missouri Baptist. Ashbrook knocked off third-ranked Weston Kelecher, 4-2. Shawn McGhee and Allen Scruggs both went 2-0 in the tournament, beginning with pins against MBU. McGhee's pin came against No. 16 Espen Conley. Westerman downed Joe LaMar in 1:09 seconds, while Scruggs beat Mike Hahn in 1:29. Westerman who was also 2-0 on the mat, pinned Joe LaMar in 42 seconds at 141 pounds. At 133 pounds, Leavell beat Detoureious Prayther, ranked fifth at 125 pounds.

In the final dual of the day, Leavell, Westerman, Teague and Nate Knauf each recorded wins for CU. McGhee's came by way of major decision, 16-12.

The Tigers (4-0) close the first semester Dec. 15-16 in Indianapolis at the Midwest Classic. CU will return to duals action Jan. 5 when it hosts Darton College, University of the Cumberlands, Lindenwood University Belleville and Indiana Tech in its home duals.
