Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead against Indiana Wesleyan University, but the undefeated Wildcats didn't fold, eventually coming out on top with a 2-1 win in double overtime.
Following a slow start, Campbellsville University finally made some noise in the 19th minute of the second half. Freshman forward, Aris Kuntz, of Independence, Ky., racked up her first career goal and the Lady Tigers' first goal of the 2012 season. Kuntz, from about 12 yards out, lifted the ball just over the arms of IWU goalie, Jamie Speidel. The Wildcats didn't grow complacent, though, and junior forward, Kelsey Johnston answered with an unassisted goal in the 10th minute.
After finishing the second half 1-1, the teams entered their first round of overtime. Despite much offensive pressure from both sides, neither could capitalize within the 10-minute period, pushing the game into a second overtime.
Four minutes in, CU forward, Jessica Ralph, fired her fifth shot of the game, but Speidel blocked the attempt. With only 2:46 left in the game, IWU freshman Kerry Devney scored her first career goal giving the Wildcats a 2-1 edge and ending the game.
"I'm very pleased with the way we played. Indiana Wesleyan is usually a Top 25 team, and I really wanted to play them to see where we are," said CU head coach, Tom Jones. "We showed we can play with anyone. We never gave up. Unfortunately, the score doesn't show it, but it was a positive experience and a good loss to learn from. It was only three years ago that we lost to IWU 7-0, so needless to say, I'm proud of where we are."
Junior goalkeeper Brandie Hagerman had an impressive defensive game, totaling seven saves.
The next CU women's soccer game will be on the road at Asbury University Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. EDT. Fans can follow the game by visiting www.CampbellsvilleTigers.com and www.AsburyEagles.com.
