Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- For the first time in program history, the Campbellsville University women's soccer team defeated Georgetown College, 1-0, Wednesday night at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field. CU scored its golden goal with 12.1 seconds remaining in double overtime.
This historic win for Campbellsville came just one day before Lady Tiger Head Coach Thom Jones' birthday.
"I told these girls that this would be the best birthday present they could give to me," Jones said. "Because in the history of the program, we have never beaten [Georgetown]. For the last six years we kept coming up short, and for this team to go into overtime for the third time this season and come out with 12.1 seconds, with the win, it shows a lot about their character. It's going to be tough to beat us from this point on."
Campbellsville utilized the hot foot of senior midfielder Cassie Yannelli of Lexington, Ky., on a corner kick with less than 15 seconds left to play in the second overtime period.
Yannelli placed the ball into a sea of Campbellsville and Georgetown players, finding fellow senior midfielder Rebekah Carl of Houston, Texas, in the box. Carl then kicked the ball into the back of the net for her fourth career goal and the Lady Tiger victory.
"After four years, it's an honor to beat Georgetown on this field." Carl said. "Coach, this whole season, has prepared us for a time like this to be in double overtime. He told us, in order to win, it's going to be the people with the most heart and the people who sacrifice. I'm honored that I got to be on the end of the ball and bring us the victory for the first time."
Wednesday's win marks the first time Campbellsville has defeated Georgetown in 21 meetings. The last three home meetings, prior to Wednesday's game, between CU and Georgetown was the closest that CU had ever come to knocking off the orange and black Tigers.
Falling by a score of 2-1 in 2006 and 2010, and a finishing with a 2-2 draw in 2008, CU finally put an end to Georgetown's 16-year unbeaten streak in the series.
CU saw opportunities to score in both halves of regulation, and again in the first overtime; but could not manage to find the back of the net.
One of the close calls came in the 32nd minute when Toria Alsip rebounded a shot off the post by Alex Shaffer, but GC keeper Kelsey Givens was there for the save. Early in the second half, Yannelli had a solid shot with Givens out of position, but Becca Dietrich slid over to block a potential goal. CU also had two free kicks from the corner of the box in the second half, but was unable to capitalize.
In the first time, it was all CU with Jessica Ralph having a shot blocked by Dietrich and one saved by Givens. Shaffer also had a shot on goal.
Jones said his team has been struggling to score all season, but feels this is the best his team has played since he has been head coach.
"I think tonight, by them fighting and fighting, nothing is going to stop us if we really want it," Jones said.
Brandie Hagerman collected 10 saves for her 15th career shutout and CU's first in the series. Givens had seven saves for Georgetown.
Campbellsville (4-4-1, 2-1 MSC) will return to action in Finley Stadium on Oct. 2 for another Mid-South Conference matchup, this time against St. Catharine College at 6 p.m. Georgetown drops to 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in the MSC.
