Tigers unable to hault Asbury rally in 3-2 loss

Box Score

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- A 2-0 halftime lead for the Tigers of Campbellsville University proved to be not enough, as they fell to the Eagles of Asbury University, 3-2, Friday at Citizens Bank Field in Finley Stadium. Campbellsville's perfect record of four wins was snapped, as Asbury handed the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Campbellsville first found the net off the foot of freshman, Roraigh Yearwood to take a 1-0 lead over Asbury. Senior Ramiro Sanchez was credited with the assist.

Though this was his first game of the season, Sanchez played a part in both of CU's goals in the first half. He scored Campbellsville's second and final goal, this time the assist went to sophomore Nathan Sahota for a 2-0 Tiger lead.

The score remained unchanged heading into halftime.

Asbury substituted goalkeepers in the second half, exchanging sophomore Griffin Appel for the senior, Dylan Fouts. Fouts recorded eight saves in the second half, five more than Appel.

Scoring for Asbury was not immediate, but persistent. The Eagles didn't find the net until 20 minutes into the second half, but scored twice in under four minutes.

Junior defender, Mark Fitch put the Eagles on the board with Asbury's first goal of the contest. Fitch was assisted on the goal by sophomore midfielder Adam Howard. Campbellsville 2-1.

The Eagles tied the match up, 2-2, when sophomore midfielder Garrett Davis was spotted by freshman, Jesse Peterson. Peterson was credited with the Asbury assist.

Campbellsville just couldn't get any late-game offense going, shooting on goal 10 times out of 22 shots in the second half.

The final goal of the game was an own-goal charged against Campbellsville University when sophomore defender Andrew Tierranegra headed the ball into the CU goal with less than a minute left in the game, Asbury 3-2.

Campbellsville freshman goalkeeper, Max Malachiyev finished the game with nine saves.

"I think talent wise, and just the quality on the field, we were there. But the guys felt like after going up two goals, that they had achieved something and we kind of backed off," Tigers head coach, Adam Preston said. "It's a young team. That's going to happen. It's just one of those things where we have to grow up and learn to play hard the whole 90 minutes. You don't want to fall into that trap and take a loss, but maybe we will learn from it. If we learn from it, that's okay; no problem. But we really have to make an effort to learn from this."

Preston says he hopes his team uses this loss as fuel into their upcoming games.

"Hopefully this is a wake-up call to some of these younger guys," Preston said.

Campbellsville (4-1) will take the rest of the weekend off until traveling to No. 1 Lindsey Wilson College next Tuesday, Sept. 11. That game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EDT.
