Jehlik's 12 points help save CU at Rio, 73-70

RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Mary Jehlik came off the bench to score 12 points, eight in the second half, and rescued Campbellsville from a potential road loss as the Lady Tigers beat Rio Grande, 73-70.

"Mary gets our game ball," said Coach Ginger Colvin. "She was just super. I know she wasn't on the top of their scouting report, but that's the beauty of our team."

CU (12-2, 6-0 MSC) trailed by seven points in the first half and by one midway through the second half. But Jehlik scored eight points, on a variety of jumpers, over the last six minutes of the game."

"Our conference is crazy, even the teams at the bottom," said Colvin. "They (Rio) are 0-6 in the conference, but they've played a tough schedule."

Campbellsville placed four players in double figures, led by Mackenzie Lee's 15. She was followed by Courtney Clifton, 13, Jehlik 12, and Katie Allen 10.

Rio (5-9) was led by Shardai Morrison-Fountain's 33 points, 22 in the second half. Sarah Bonar had 12 for the RedStorm, but did not score after intermission.

The Lady Tigers built five-point leads four times in the second half, but poor free throw shooting and inopportune turnovers prohibited CU from putting the game away.

Campbellsville hit 8-10 free throws in the first half but only 11-17 after intermission. CU committed 22 turnovers.

"We turned the ball over way too much," said Colvin, "and that's not like us."

The Lady Tigers took a 72-67 lead with 1:05 left after a Jehlik bucket and a Lee free throw. But Fountain converted a three-point play to edge Rio to within 72-70. Clifton hit one of two free throws at :09 to ensure that the game could not be won in regulation by the RedStorm.

Campbellsville stays on the road Saturday at Shawnee State (2:00). The game can be heard on CU Radio 88.7, or by going to the link at www.campbellsvilletigers.com.
