No. 6 Campbellsville sweeps home-opening duals

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- Campbellsville University men's wrestling swept its home opener Saturday, winning two duals with ease over Rend Lake College, 32-6, and Lindenwood University-Belleville, 44-6, in the Tigers' annual CU Duals.

The duals, featuring three rounds of wrestling on three mats and six teams, were the first in Powell Athletic Center since the early years of the CU wrestling program.

"I thought it was a good day for us. It is a nice tune-up for national duals (next week)," said Franky James, CU head coach. "Our guys had a great training session over Christmas break. This team has shown good discipline with weight control and that showed today."

Campbellsville did not lose a competitive match in its only NAIA dual of the day against Lindenwood-Belleville. CU built a 44-0 lead before forfeiting its match at heavyweight. One of the biggest wins of the dual belonged to freshman Michael Johnson of Woodbine, Ga., at 174 pounds. Johnson won a 3-1 decision over Lindenwood's Larry Lanier, who earlier in the day upset Indiana Tech's Tanner Martin, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA.

Johnson finished the day 2-0, recording an 8-0 win in his home debut earlier in the day against Rend Lake. Also going 2-0 on the day were Joe Whalen and Nate Knauf.

"Michael Johnson and Robert Boston both did a great job managing their weight and competing today," James said.

Boston, a freshman from Indianapolis, pinned Lindenwood's Blake Angle in 2:13 for his first home match as a Tiger.

Campbellsville's first dual of the day came in the second round, a 32-6 win over junior college Rend Lake. The dual featured two Top 15 matches, as Eric Tozzi, ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA, defeated NAIA No. 8 Brandon Westerman, 4-1, and the NAIA's top-ranked 157 pounder, Conor Young, beat eighth-ranked juco wrestler Justin Cash, 3-1. Rend Lake's other points in the dual came at 125 pounds, as Jameel Carter defeated Jarvis Elam with a late takedown, 6-5.

No. 6 Campbellsville, No. 12 University of the Cumberlands and No. 6 Indiana Tech each were undefeated on the day. Tech and CU were 2-0, while Cumberlands was 3-0. Rend Lake beat Darton College, coached by Tiger alum and former assistant coach James Hicks, 35-24, to start the day. Lindenwood was 0-3.
