Tigers lose heartbreaker down stretch at Georgetown

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Campbellsville University battled throughout the day against No. 12 Georgetown College but could not capitalize on GC's mistakes Saturday. Campbellsville dropped its fourth straight game against the Tigers dressed in orange and black, 19-14.

CU used two fourth down conversions on its final drive to position the maroon and white Tigers a chance at their first lead over Georgetown since 2009. Redshirt freshman quarterback Tajh Milliken scrambled for what would have been a 10-yard touchdown but the score was negated by a holding penalty.

Campbellsville was then backed up to the 20 yard line where it was first down. But the CU Tigers could not muster enough offense late in the game as they were forced into a fourth down and 30 on their final play from scrimmage. Georgetown recorded three of its four sacks of the game in the final four plays to dash the hopes of a Campbellsville comeback.

The visiting Tigers held Georgetown to its lowest offensive output (277 yards) since the 2011 season and forced four turnovers to help pitch their third second-half shutout in the last four games.

CU's first Edward Jones takeaway came quickly.

Campbellsville won the opening coin flip and deferred to the second half. Georgetown's Joe Ganci returned the opening kickoff to its own 26-yard line. GC quarterback Neal Pawsat connected with Ben Patenaude on the first pass of the game, but Steven Delgado came up with a big hit to force a fumble.

Milliken received his first career start for CU over an injured Bryan Parnes, but Parnes entered the game on the first series. Campbellsville's opening drive was brief after Parnes threw an interception on his second pass of the day, right to the hands of GC's Channing Gordon.

That was all the momentum Georgetown needed to kick-start its next drive.

Pawsat led the GC Tigers down the field and on a free play, where Campbellsville jumped offsides, he threw a jump ball to the middle of the end zone. Logan Crockett went up over the CU defense for the one-handed touchdown catch. GC's extra point try missed wide, keeping it 6-0.

The next drive for Georgetown went much like its last. Pawsat had another big gain on a pass to Crocket and was tackled at the 1-yard line by Davian Evans-Dufrene. Georgetown's second touchdown came on the next play - a quarterback sneak by Pawcet to go up 12-0. The 2-point try was unsuccessful.

Campbellsville was sparked by a first quarter-ending 44-yard kickoff return by Larry Walls. Georgetown stopped the visiting Tigers on three straight plays but Parnes completed a 35-yard pass to Cole Chrisman to set up CU's first score of the day.

Parnes completed his fourth pass on the day to Jarrod Harrington for a 15-yard touchdown. Will Ward's PAT was good to cut Georgetown's lead to 12-7.

After two more Georgetown punts, Campbellsville took over on its own 1-yard line. Ben Axon got the Tigers out of danger with a 7-yard run, but GC held Campbellsville on the next three plays to force fourth down and inches. On the next play, Parnes completed a pass to Trevon Chatman for a 30-yard gain and what would be a first down but the gain was taken away by another costly holding penalty.

Georgetown took over again after the third punt on the day by Erik Krivitsky. But Pawsat forced a pass into triple coverage and junior saber Stetson Pendergrass came up with his first interception of the year. CU was forced to punt though, for the fourth time in the half.

After Krivitsky recorded his longest punt of the day (50 yards), Georgetown took over with four minutes left on the clock in the first half.

Aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty, Georgetown moved the ball to the CU 34 yard line and scored seven plays later to extend its lead to 12 points, 19-7.

Parnes exited the game early in the second quarter with an injury, leaving Milliken under center the rest of the way.

"Tajh played well today as he has most of the year," said CU Head Coach Perry Thomas. "With him and Parnes battling all fall for the number one spot, it has helped them both step their games up. Tahj brings a different style of play to the game and that caused problems for the Georgetown defense."

The second half started out with a 30-yard kick return by kicker/receiver Will Ward. After picking up a first down, CU was stopped on the next three plays. Krivitsky and CU lined up for what would be their fifth punt on the day, but up-back Seth McFerrin caught the snap from Blake Young and picked up the first down on a 6-yard run off the right side.

The fake punt, CU's first since the Ron Finley era, sparked Campbellsville and gave the CU Tiger faithful, who made the two hour trip north, something to cheer for.

On the next play from scrimmage, Campbellsville attempted to go deep down field as Milliken's pass was incomplete but Georgetown was called for pass interference. The penalty moved the ball down to the 20-yard line but the drive was cut short when Gordon picked off Milliken in the end zone. It was Gordon and Georgetown's second interception of the game.

Late in the third quarter, Campbellsville finally took advantage of the penalties and sloppy play by Georgetown. Milliken led CU down the field and connected with Demytreus Gipson on a 35-yard touchdown pass to get Campbellsville back in the game, 19-14.

As the GC Tigers took over for their next possession Pawcat scrambled left and Rashaud Hill stepped in front of the GC receiver for CU's second interception of the day and third forced turnover.

Campbellsville took over on the GC 24 yard-line and was forced into another fourth down and short play. Milliken scrambled left and Trevon Chatman came open in the GC secondary to pull in an 11-yard pass for the Tiger first down.

Chatman finished the day with a team-leading eight catches for 74 yards receiving.

Looking to take the lead with good field position, the Tigers were called for another costly personal foul and forced Thomas to call on kicker Ward to attempt a 35 yard-field, but he missed wide right.

GC took over on the 18 yard line of Campbellsville and took advantage of two more 15-yard penalties by CU. Georgetown started to control the clock with its run game using senior running back Zach Sowder. He ended the day with 40 yards on the ground and a first-half touchdown.

Campbellsville recorded its third interception and fourth turnover of the day as Evans-Dufrene stepped in front of Ben Patenaude in the end zone for a touchback to set up CU's final drive.

The difference maker on the day turned out to be the penalties for Campbellsville. The Tigers recorded only one penalty last week but were penalized eight times for 80 yards this week - all in key situations like the late would-be touchdown run by Milliken that was erased.

"We didn't give ourselves a chance to compete when you have that many penalties in key moments," said Thomas. "Their defense limited our running game and our penalties put us behind the eight ball. That's on us and we have to fix them this week at practice."

Despite the loss and failed last drive, Offensive Coordinator Ricky Gehres was pleased with Milliken's ability to manage third and fourth down situations.

"We have all the confidence in Tahj," said Gehres. "He made some key decisions in big moments late in the game and that gave us opportunities down the stretch."

CU trailed the entire game but took advantage of numerous third and fourth down conversions. CU was 8-of-20 on third downs and 3-of-4 on fourth downs, including the fake punt.

Axon led CU's ground game with only 36 yards on eight attempts and Milliken led the Tigers through the air with 137 yards on 11-of-23 passing. He added one touchdown and one interception.

Campbellsville outmatched Georgetown in the time of possession as well in the second half. CU had the ball for 24:48 in the last 30 minutes compared to Georgetown's 8:58. But the CU Tigers could only manage seven points after the break.

The trio of Travon Montgomery, Steven Delgado and Blake Young each recorded six tackles to lead the CU defense.

Campbellsville (3-3, 2-0 MSC West) has a week off before returning to action back at Finley Stadium. CU will host Cumberland University Oct. 26 kickoff will be at 2:30 p.m.
