"It was a good win tonight against a tough opponent. Field conditions weren't the best, but the guys fought hard and still pulled out the victory. We have to play better going forward, but still glad to get the win," said Adam Preston, Campbellsville's head coach.
CU, ranked No. 22 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, scored quickly, as Alex Higdon flipped the ball from the top of the box to Kevon Farqhurason to take a 1-0 lead just 5:08 into the first half.
Asbury managed to tie the game, 1-1, in the 22nd minute when Jesse Peterson fooled CU keeper Max Malachiyev and tapped a goal into the open net.
CU took a 2-1 lead into halftime after Ryan Foster rebounded a blocked Roraigh Yearwood and pounded it in for the go-ahead goal with 29 seconds left in the half.
Foster scored again, in similar fashion, early in the second half. Adam Fridell played a ball into Dru Sin, whose cross was blocked but settled at the feet of Foster, who banged it into the net for a 3-1 lead in the 52nd minute.
Asbury responded with a goal in the 58th minute by Chris Israel, cutting the game back within a goal, 3-2.
Fridell picked up his second assist of the day, finding Alex Ryan for a goal in the 65th minute and then center back John Kennedy clinched the win in the 80th minute. Lewis Fyfe collected the final assist, playing the ball in from the edge of the box to Kennedy, who backed down the Asbury defender and smashed a left-footed jab for his second goal of the season.
CU out shot Asbury 21 to 13 with 13 shots on goal to Asbury's five. John Burns had eight saves in the loss for the Eagles, while Malachiyev had three saves.
Campbellsville (12-1-1) will return to action Saturday, Oct. 19 at Shawnee State University for a Mid-South Conference game beginning at 3 p.m. EDT. Â
